Bottom line. Concentrate on academics. You will get more money from a pivate college if you are strong academically plus you will do better once you get there.

Interesting how colleges actually look at soccer as a non revenue sport unlike some other sports (like basketball and football). Not much funding available for soccer.

Let's face it. Unless your son/daughter is insanely devoted and good at soccer you are much better off putting your money into a college savings account than paying for all these tournaments hoping your son/daughter will get noticed and recerive a small scholarship.

Even if they are gifted they are only any injury away from not getting a penny to play in college.

I like to think about it this way - I'm investing in my kids - sports teach lots of lessons, the travel can be enlightening and educational, etc. Others have posted about this prior.

Think about it like your house - if you buy your house simply for the investment and the potential return then there is the risk that home prices may not appreciate as much as you'd hoped. Hopefully you are saving and investing in your future in other ways, and you enjoy your home for the other intrinsic value that it brings to you and your family. If the house appreciates hugely (or your kid's soccer experience results in college money or even just more looks at colleges that might not otherwise consider your kid), then that's a big plus. If the scholarship money isn't there well hopefully your kid (and you) enjoyed the ride along the way.
