Yes, Bruno's U18 boys coach Joe Avila had a heart attack yesterday and passed away. Horrible tragedy. There was a story in the Providence Journal this morning.

No, it's not a shame at all. The states that have a state cup at U11 and U12 have it wrong.

U16 Stars have it easy. Their group is a cake walk. In the semis, they will play the winner of the Group of Death, who should be depleted by then. The challenge comes in the final versus Albertson. Let the games begin.

Could be worse, Vermont/ Far post was beaten by Syosett 10-0. The two top teams switch opponents tommorrow, and so expect similar blow-outs. Imagine making the trip from Vermont and losing your first two games by a -20+ GD? The state based selection made sense 10 years ago, but it is foolish today..

What's so bad about having a state cup for U11's and U12's?

Google search and read the volumes of available material by experts whose explanations are quite eloquent. I 've posted the various reasons a number of times, but no one cares.

nothing inherently wrong with state cup, regionals, and even a world cup for U11 and U12, it's just that parents and adults can't be trusted to keep it in perspective. Kids will have fun, most keep score, and would enjoy the whole thing.
