How do the clubs handle this issue? Especially at middle school age. By the time Sunday rolls around, it's just another day. Hard to play too much football, but too much useless practice can hurt. Any thoughts?

It all depend on what the individual goals are. Kids that want to play on top level teams are going to bypass middle school soccer to play for their club teams where practices will not be regarded as useless.

"Hard to play too much football,"
Kids can definitely play too much football (the structured kind) and you've just expressed what happens when they do - game day becomes just another day. This has been a complaint many college coaches have of the kids that come into their programs. They are not mentally prepared for games because they've played too many games.

Clubs will strongly encourage your kid to quit town and laugh off middle school. Of course, they'll also cut your kid if they aren't in the top 1/3 of the team leaving them high and dry but that's on another thread.

My son's club says they should not play town after U-12. Some players still do, and you see the effects if they try to play a town game in the morning and a region 1 game in the afternoon. Throw in a Maple game on Sunday and it is too much soccer. Not too mention the likelihood of injury from bad town play.
How many middle schools offer a soccer team? Outside of private schools I am not aware of any school soccer opportunitues until high school at which time the season doesn't conflict with club.

Does MIAA get involved in Middle School sports. If so their rules control, even if they are not good or common sense rules.

I've seen kids play only club and club plus MS. By this age (8th grade), most kids will opt out of town if they are at all serious about soccer - at least in Hopkinton.
