My guess is, since you almost coached at MIT, that you have been around a lot of kids. And yes, there is something to the "biology" of teenage minds, but I would venture that you coached kids you would recommend highly and some that you would not recommend highly, as I would guess that this was behavior-related....not just the specific behavior you saw but also their attitudes the behavior and how they handled being confronted and intervention. You are the one that needs some help with reading skills. Given how prolific you are with posting at least give the courtesy of reading for comprehension instead of posting in response to what you think was being asked 10 pages ago? Now that this is settled, please tell us your standards for determining when a kid is showing actual warning signs. I did ask you that 10 pages ago!

To another poster, I don't assume my teenagers are saints, although they are good kids. But, if repeatedly talked to my kids about the importance of not ending up on FB in compromising circumstances, and if they did it anyway, and especially if they clearly do so in a way that showed blatant and intentional poor judgment, and if I also found cursing, racist comments, and derogatory sexual orientation comments....well, then, we have a problem. My kids don"t get red cards. And I don't think they're concealing getting red cards.
We're talking about character....and you can assess character in adults AND 17 year olds. Some of us may find out that we are wrong, but that doesn't mean character and lack of character don't exist.
Hallelujah, we finally have a thoughtful post.

It was included in his comments at Soccerhead so don't see why it can't be included here.

Sorry - I wasn't clear where it came from.

I guess I am just more of a "realist" (not to infer that you are not). We used every means at our disposal to know as much of what was really going on with my kid versus what we were told. We did trust him hence the freedoms he received and temporarily lost when we found out otherwise (from various sources).

To me, not looking at things they are doing is like putting your head in the sand and that is the way your earlier posts hit me. I agree that trust is a delicate balance and goes both ways. I also trust that I am not always given the whole truth. I certainly did not catch everything that was done, but some of the things that were discovered were discussed at an appropriate time in as meaningful a way as can be done with a teenager.

Well stated and to the point.
The process of raising children may involve techniques and applications that are unique to certain family dynamics. I am certainly not claiming that my methods work for everyone, and if your methods have been working for you, that is what is actually important. I was as rebellious as could be, and I think that experience has given me wisdom that I wouldn't have.

I just read in the paper today where a waitress was fired for griping about a $5 tip on her Facebook site. The restaurant she worked for has a policy that prohibits disparaging them on social networks. Perhaps it is unfortunate but Freedom of Speech has its downside.
