RISE selects Noble and Greenough School standout as Gatorade Massachusetts Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year
In its third decade of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Gatorade joined with RISE Magazine to name senior goalkeeper JAN TRNKA-AMRHEIN of NOBLE AND GREENOUGH SCHOOL in Dedham as its 2007-08 Massachusetts Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year.
The senior goalkeeper recorded 10 shutouts and allowed just six goals this past fall, leading the Bulldogs (13-2-2) to the New England Prep School Class A semifinals. Winner of the Golden Glove award, presented to the 2007 adidas ESP Camp’s top keeper, Trnka-Amrhein did not give up more than one goal in any game this season. The Independent School Co-Player of the Year as named by the Boston Globe and the ISL Defensive Player of the Year, he concluded his prep career having allowed only 11 total goals.
Trnka-Amrhein has maintained a B average in the classroom. A member of his school’s concert choir, he participates in multiple community-service initiatives, including his mentorship of students at Saint Peter Elementary School in Dorchester and his service as a counselor at area youth soccer camps. He also traveled to New Orleans as a humanitarian-aid volunteer after Hurricane Katrina.
“When we played against him, he just dominated the match in a way I’ve never seen out of most goalkeepers at this level,†said Dusty Richards, head coach at rival Brooks School. “He wasn’t just good defensively, he really controlled his box in a way that made us change the way that we had to attack. Great goalkeepers usually make saves that no one else makes, but he dominates in so many other ways that dictate and determine the outcome of the game. We couldn’t get anything in against him. His range is so much better than almost every kid.â€
Trnka-Amrhein has verbally committed to a soccer scholarship at Duke University this fall.
