    College travel

    From the moderator at BOTN.

There was a discussion in the CT forum that indicated 80% of CFC 2009 grads (20) were attending schools 3 hours or less from home and 8 of those players were staying in state. IIRC only 2 were playing out of region and both were in North Carolina.

With a small sample (dealing with twenty players), one or two players can make the change from 80% to 90%. BOTN Industries figures are tested against all of Region One and the CFC numbers, unsolicited and undoctored, support our metrics.

There are many reasons why the "three hour rule" from home comes into play when it comes to college. First, it does allow the parents to see the collegiate student-athlete play with reasonable ease. Second, there is a sense of security for the first-time away from home student to be able to have that relatively short drive for a visit. Third, when it comes to holidays or just coming home for a weekend for a meal and clean clothes, the travel is less of a hurdle. Now, during soccer season, home bound travel might be extremely limited from August through late October, but the option is there none the less.

Based on results, Disney, CASL, and PDA are more than enough to cover the hard core needs for recruitment. Vegas is a boondoggle on travel as are the Texas events and Surf Cup. There is no club team that can have all eighteen players benefit from a west coast or southern swing of US tournament simply because 90% of all Region One players wind up playing within the states of Region One.

You are preaching to the choir! The ECNL folks have a different point of view though...

I would agree with you as to Surf Cup. But you cannot be more wrong about Vegas. It is one of the top 3 tournaments nationally and the exapnsive list of college coaches there covers the entire nation. The issus you miss in the mostly very good post above is that the coaches want to see the players multiple times in settings that are as high a level of competition as possible. Thus the better players who are capable of playing in a Vegas setting will benefit greatly from the Region 1 coaches seeing them again in Vegas. That inlcudes schools like Rutgers, BC and others who will be there as well as at Disney and PDA. And it will coaches who are not at scorpion bowl and Memorial Day in Needham.

So the kid and family who can only afford to go to a few closer tournaments are at a disadvantage? If that's the case something is terribly wrong. Disney around New Years Eve is expensive. A Vegas trip combined with a Texas trip is also.
Would a college coach really say " I saw this one before and now I'm convinced she could help us.

Interesting that the poster used BC and Rutgers as examples. Look at what states their recruiting classes are coming from.

BU actually has far more out of region players on their roster than does BC.

Just saw on the U17 thread that Aztecs U17 are going to Nomads in CA and Carmel in IN this spring. What is all that about, also did some research to play for Aztecs U17 costs more than Scorpions U17, Stars United U17 and Stars Rovers U17. Can you say MK is milking it??

If you researched a little harder you would see MPS U17s charge more than Aztecs, Stars and Scorpions U17s. Now that is laughable.

Add up fees and all associated travel costs and then compare - they're not that far apart

I don't think this is about one Mass club vs another.

The best players on the best teams in the country are recruited by the top D1 womens college programs nationally, maybe 10% of all ECNL players. These are regional or national pool players, kids who are on everyones radar wether they play for Slammers, Stars, PDA or Eclipse.

I'll bet that Vegas, Disney, CASL etc work well for that top 10% of talent or for top players who have the academic chops for schools like Stanford and the Ivies which attract their students from all 50 states anyway. The other 90% will find programs within the "3 hr rule" and BTW be happy there. Nothing wrong with that.

Couple of random examples...Iona (NY) has 19 of 21 players from New York and NJ, the other two are from Pa and Md...or take TCNJ, the 2009 NCAA D3 finalist, where EVERY player comes from New Jersey. Do they really need to scout players at all these fly-to tournaments?

Nope. With MK, it is all about ego.

Wrong. With MK it is all about ego, making money, and employing his brothers and buddies. And my kid left the club because of it, so we have happily moved on.
