Why try-outs are making your team worse

Very good new post at A Coaching Life on the problem with try-outs

I see some of the points made but I think this assumes that a team doesn't have many substitutes on a week to week basis.

The HS teams in the area have so many substitutes that I'm sure there's daily competition to show the coach that you deserve more playing time ...

If you have a small squad, I can the see point about the tryouts. But you could argue that its really the coaches regretting who they selected from the tryouts. I will agree that only seeing a player for a day or two will lead to choosing a less that optimal squad (and it happens at all levels and when you've seen players for months ...)

How about some competition among the coaches with coaching tryouts - how do these coaches get chosen? Maybe they interview well and then you're stuck with them for the entire season. How about choosing the best coach during the week - they become the head coach while the others are assistants ... while others watch the game from the stands. Or, how about having someone fill out a coaching evaluation form after each match.

This is an interesting perspective. It is hard to know when you first get started in club soccer.

Just think how hard the job is for college coaches watching players at a tournament.

very true, is it true that college coaches will watch a player 2 or 3 times? is it more or less? It has to be difficult for them to get around to everyone.

Depends on the coach, the player, the potential money involved.

PO.S. After the commitment is made they still watch.

              Wow!

Someone just touched on a great idea. Instead of having 10 year olds tryout. Have the coaches tryout for the players by demonstrating their coaching skills. Then the players enter a lottery system and select the coaches in order. Ensure that there are enough coaches present so that about 25% wind up not having a team.

Then make them go through this process every year until they stop coaching.
