Kristine Lilly pregnant: Former Wilton soccer star will skip Olympics

    By Tim Murphy

Kristine Lilly, the former standout soccer star at Wilton High School who later went on to Olympic and World Cup soccer fame, has announced that she is pregnant and will not play in the upcoming Olympics.

In an exclusive interview with The Bulletin on Monday, Ms. Lilly said she found out she was pregnant in November, and is expected to give birth in July.

While she said she would not play in the Olympics, Ms. Lilly, who is 36, said she did not plan to retire from the sport.

“It’s going to be a little bit of a transition, but I’d like to play again when the women’s pro league returns next April,â€￾ said Ms. Lilly. “I would also consider playing for the national team if I get called up again.â€￾

Ms. Lilly said a press release would be coming out later today.

Ms. Lilly graduated from Wilton High School in 1989, playing on three state champion and three FCIAC champion teams. She won four straight NCAA titles at the University of North Carolina and has played for the U.S. national team since 1987.

Ms. Lilly has won two World Cup titles and two Olympic gold medals with U.S. team. She holds the record for the most international appearances by a man or woman with more than 300 caps. Ms. Lilly played for the Boston Breakers in the Women’s United Soccer Association.

Ms. Lilly is married to Dave Heavey, a firefighter in Brookline, Mass., where the couple lives.
Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.

Well good for her. I hope now all the posters who made snide comments about her being tired (those of us who have actually BEEN pregnant will understand!) will gulp and step back to reflect about all the good things this woman has done for girls' soccer in this country. I think she is pretty humble about acknowledging that even if she tries to come back and play post-baby it is certainly not guaranteed and she will have to prove herself all over again. Her work ethic and fitness level are unbelievable so it isn't out of the question, but I suspect that if it does not work out that way she will leave her playing days behind with a smile on her face and a nod to the next generation.

I think in some ways it became a Solo vs. Lilly type thing but it is not really fair to either of them. Lilly has reached a level of achievement that few have. The late 90's early 00's team was one of the most dominant teams of an era in any sports. To me what they did ranks up there with UCLA hoops under Wooden, The Yankees of the 50's, and the Celtics of the 50's and 60's. They were clearly the best in every match. The Solo supporters her criticized her for not taking a leadership role in the R yan / Solo brouhaha. Maybe she did. By not undermining her coach. Whether or not she agreed with his move.

Well, doesnt matter now because the new coach undermined him already.

If it is a girl, the Brookline coaches will be ready, however, the MPS partnership with the Breakers probably requires the child to go to a SOE.

Let's hope that she has no problems and the baby is healthy.

That would make 25 for the roster
