My thoughts after working an R3PL game tonight

I found this post on the Georgia Forum and thought it was a great post by a ref.

Tonight, I worked another R3PL game. You would think that people whose players have made it this far would at least know not to make stupid comments to refs.

"It's where he was when the ball was kicked." Really? Thanks for letting me know. BTW, where was he when the ball was kicked? Can you tell me, because I am sure you were looking at the person kicking the ball like most people do in a game.

"He's offsides." No, he is in an offside position but not involved in play. The flag stays down. PS: it is called offside, without the "s."

"He's offsides." No, you cannot be offside on your side of the field.

"The whole ball has to be outside the line." I always miss that call, eventhough I am straddling the line and you are thirty feet behind me and 10 feet off the line. Thanks for making sure I hear you, too.

"Call it both ways." My favorite. One day I will point both directions at once and call it both ways.

"Hand ball." No such call, folks. It is "handling," which requires several components for the call to be made. Just because it hits the arm, it is not a "hand ball," which does not even exist. Often the ball hits the hand, aka ball to hand, and the call you expect does not come because if it hits the arm or hand, it must be called a hand ball. No, it does not.

"He got the ball first." And the player he crippled when he ran thru him? If he fouls the opposing player, it is a foul. "Ball first" has even been taken out of the rulebook.

"That's delay of game." No, the keeper has to pick it up and hold it before the 6 second rule comes in to play.

Learn the laws of the game so you quit making foolish comments like this.

Good post and informative. While I'm sure many parents have coached at high levels and taken ref courses, for the rest of us, we learn (or don't) on the fly. I tend to call 'em as I see 'em, but as that usually leans in favor of my kid / team, well I wouldn't make a good ref.

Great information. It would also interesting if another ref came on with some other "stupid" things that parents say. Inform us.
I admit, My son played on an elite level and then went to college on a partial scholarship. You would think, after watching him play since he was 4 that I would know more than I do. In my defense however, it is so much easier to watch like the USMNT, (like I didn't get to do last night), than follow my own son's game. Reason is, that I am watching him and the ball, so I am not sure if the opossing player was offside, (and no I did not know that there was no s).
