Ramon Castro, 55, was arrested Thursday morning in connection with the early July 6 attack on a 34-year-old man on 77th Street near 37th Road in Jackson Heights, authorities said.

Castro — who has previously been arrested dozens of times, including for allegedly swiping an ATM machine — got into a spat with the victim around 3:10 a.m. and at one point snarled, “I hate Latinos and f—-t people!,” according to cops and prosecutors.

Then he slashed the victim in the face with a wooden stake, cutting his cheek, according to prosecutors.

The entire bail system is a mess - low amounts for a serious charge like that (thanks NRA), high amounts for many non violent offenses. Some states are re-writing the rules but more needs to be done. When people can't pay bail even for minor non-violent offenses then they can't work, can't support their kids. You hurt someone, you're a major drug dealer, gun charges? Charge them a fortune.

Earlier Thursday, Johnson joined other members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) at a rally outside the Supreme Court to urge the Senate to scrap its legislative filibuster, which requires 60 votes to pass most bills. Many Democrats say the change is needed to pass the For The People Act, which would mandate early voting and automatic voter registration nationwide, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which looks to restore protections from the 1965 Voting Rights Act.


Following the rally — which included remarks by Democratic Reps. Jamaal Bowman of New York, Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, Troy Carter of Louisiana, Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, and Al Green of Texas in addition to Johnson — the protesters marched to the Hart Senate Office Building while chanting, “This is what democracy looks like.”

In a statement, US Capitol Police said they arrested two men and seven women in the atrium of the building after giving them three warnings to clear the doorway.
