WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Saturday that he was considering an "enforceable quarantine" in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area due to the coronavirus outbreak, saying the decision could come as soon as later in the day.

“Some people would like to see New York quarantined because its a hot spot. New York, New Jersey, maybe one or two other places. Certain parts of Connecticut quarantined,”

Cuomo dismisses Trump’s suggestion of a quarantine for the New York region.
Minutes after President Trump floated the possibility of a quarantine for the New York region, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Saturday dismissed the idea, calling it “unworkable.”

“I spoke to the president about the ship coming up and the four sites, I didn’t speak to him about any quarantine,” Mr. Cuomo said at an afternoon briefing, referring to a hospital ship and four emergency hospitals being installed in New York.

“I don’t even know what that means,” the governor said of a potential quarantine of New York. “I don’t know how that could be legally enforceable. From a medical point of view, I don’t know what you would be accomplishing. I don’t even like the sound of it.”

Mr. Trump, speaking to reporters on the White House lawn, had said earlier in the day that he was considering imposing what he called, without elaborating, an “enforceable” quarantine that would restrict travel in and out of New York, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut."

They're telling NYers to self quarantine and taking down their contact information. If they own homes or leases the state can't keep them out. I think trying to outright ban people from other states is a very slippery legal slope. Plus when you tell Americans not to do something they only want to do it more.

both are fair points- but this is uncharted territory- the courts will allow some leeway for the public health concerns- how much IDK
i have a natural distrust for the Govt overreach in these instances but its the states that are initiating this right now on their own

Saw an interview with a FL state prosecutor talking about Desantis trying to stop them. He basically said it's a joke without saying it. The airports didn't have staffing forgot and there are a million ways to Sunday to go around it (just fly through another city.
FL wasn't stopping anyone on the roads either). I suppose to the extent the threat got some to hesitate and change their minds it works. Bottom line is people need to think about others at a time like this, not just themselves.

Trump is talking about doing it. Taking to the federal level brings a whole new set of thorny legal issues

Will Trump block red states like FL, LA and TX that are also seeing cases grow? Or is it just for blue states? Of course Trump gave no thought to how such an action would work or the resources it would require.

Cuomo Compares Trump’s Quarantine Idea to ‘War on States’: Live Updates https://nyti.ms/33WaPcX

Mr. Cuomo, in an interview with CNN, expressed frustration and confusion over Mr. Trump’s vague suggestion earlier in the day that he was considering somehow sealing off New York, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut to slow the spread of the coronavirus, which has the New York City area as its epicenter.

“This would be a declaration of war on states,” Mr. Cuomo said, noting that other states were also seeing surges in confirmed cases of the virus. “A federal declaration of war.”

The idea, Mr. Cuomo said, was at odds with Mr. Trump’s professed desire to restart the economy.

“You would paralyze the financial sector.” the governor said. He also questioned the logistical challenges, and the message, such a move would present.

“It would be total mayhem,” he said.

“If you start walling off areas all across the country it would just be totally bizarre, counterproductive, anti-American, antisocial,” he added.

                        Socialized medicine.....don’t believe the hype

“Another source of pride for the Spanish has been the country’s robust public health care system; last year, a study ranked Spain as the world’s healthiest country. But that part of the national self-image has also taken a beating from a pandemic that has overwhelmed many hospitals and sickened thousands of health care workers.”- nyt today

Their healthcare systems being overwhelmed now is because of government ineptitude in waiting too long - just like here. At least there you won't go broke if you get sick. Nearly all government run healthcare systems have more hospital beds per capita than we do. Our for profit system has squeezed every penny out of the system.

Trump is finally getting it, calling for distancing measures to remain until the end of April. Hopefully his ADHD won't kick in again and he changes his mind in another 3 days. Better that we all accept this reality. Decisions need to be made about when to reopen schools, if at all. Plans need to be made to gradually re open businesses in a manner that keeps as many people healthy as possible. Take this time to get it right.

Our new reality may look like China - everyone wears masks when they're out and has to be temp checked every day before entering school or work.

we will never become a socialist country...Never!!! But let us know how you feel if the following would happen:

You are now taxed over 50% of your income...but!!!

                              1) your mortgage will remain the same...this is a big one.
                              2) Your property taxes will only go up (never go down)...this is another big one.
                              2) retail prices for groceries will generally stay the same.
                              3) price of gas will generally stay the same (market rate).
                              4) as of right know we do not know what media sources are credible and witch ones are not...If we ever become socialist country we will not be able to trust any media!!!!!

The American people will be entirely dependent on the government...The american dream of becoming independent and free will be DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!

The notion of working hard to get what you want will also be dead...Is this what we want for our children???

Pr...you won't have to file for bankruptcy if you have a serious illness. You won't hesitate going to the doctor because you don't have a massive deductible. You don't cut back in taking your medications because you can't afford them. You don't have to stay in a job you hate because you need their health insurance. You can start your own company without fear of not having insurance. You can hire more employees and pay them more because insurance costs are now gone. The nonprofit you run can plow money back into programs instead of paying for insurance. If your young adult loses their job they will have coverage. Yeah, I do want that for my kids. me too.

Sorry con but a majority of Americans favor some kind of MFA or MFA + employer plans. If you add up everything you pay for healthcare now, chances are you will be well ahead with a government plan Budget adjustments can be made so that tax hits and minimal if at all (higher taxes for the wealthy and corporations, cut other budget items). It means reprioritizing for a better society.
