Op here that was my point. CT is not the rest of the US, not by a long shot. That's why listening to friends a family across the US is much more representative than local sideline parents.

we should attack both- the employers should be hit with steep fines per head and they congress should take the issue of illegal immigration seriously and put teeth into the laws
right now we do nothing so people are apathetic and say "what can we do?" so we continue to do nothing as the problem gets worse

I'm a Dem who is all for immigration reform. We absolutely need a better system for temporary workers. Make it easier to work here legally for short periods of time and you lessen the need to enter illegally. Make them apply for 3-5 year visas, they can't enter without proof of a job, vet them, track them, (failure to report for check ins or any legal trouble beyond a parking ticket gets you booted back home) have them pay taxes, then send them home once their term is up. Then they can re-apply from home again. We absolutely need to ramp up penalties for companies that hire illegals (right now it's wrist slap).

The cold hard reality is we need cheap immigrant labor to keep our economy humming, but there's better ways to go about it. Trump wants to scale unskilled visas way back when in reality when need far more. Just make unskilled visas temporary and make requirements for more permanent visas much tougher in terms of skills and education.

The more workers you have available the lower the prevailing wage will be. There mere presence lowers the wages. They are partially to blame for the lack of wage growth over the last decade. In 1990 we had 20,000 illegals in CT, today , 120,000. It is nonsense to say we " need " 100,000 more illegals when there are 85,000 CT Citizens still unemployed. It is nonsense to say we need illegals to do the jobs other Americans wont do. At no time in American history after 1850 have immigrants been more than 15 % of the population.

IN 2018, the US population is around 325 million with an estimated 11 million illegals.

We increased 75 million and gained 7.5 % illegals. See the trend ? See the problem ? With the average education level of an illegal around 8th grade or even lower, how does letting 7.5 million more illegals into the workforce help the US economy ? It doesn't , it drains it.
