"The U.S. now has its very own COVID-19 variant and scientists believe the burgeoning strain is likely linked to the surge in cases in Los Angeles County.

Two independent research groups discovered the strain in California while seeking the more contagious, possible more deadly, British variant in the state. Although the researchers found the UK strain ― B.1.1.7 ― in scattered cases in Los Angeles, San Diego and San Bernardino counties, they weren’t expecting to discover a homegrown variant.

The California variant ― CAL.20C - was barely detectable in early October, researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles said. But by late December, it accounted for 24% of virus samples taken from southern California patients and about 36% of tested Los Angeles samples.

The strain, scientists warned in their research report, “may be partially responsible for the magnitude of the surge in COVID-19 on the West Coast.”

Los Angeles County has emerged as one of the nation’s coronavirus hotspots. By mid-January, the county reported more than 1 million COVID-19 cases and nearly 14,000 deaths. More than two-thirds of the cases have occurred since the beginning of November, which is about the time or shortly after that scientists said the California variant took off."

Great. But it is still receding like the other strains. That’s what virus do this time of year when they are endemic.

It is TWO MASK to you...
      Mask harder!
The new more contagious variant is quickly spreading. Depending on the source, it's estimated to be 50-70% more contagious and can spread in much less time than the current 15minutes of exposure that has been the standard. Considering how poor fitting many masks are, and the cloth ones generally insufficient, two isn't a bad idea if you have to be indoors for a prolonged time period. Quality N95s are still very hard to find and some people just can't afford a large supply of them either.

So Central and South America's high cases per capita are explained how? They're in summer right now.

What's to eliminate? They have no cases. That is not what they're doing. They want to get enough people vax'd and on a seasonal vaccination schedule, much like with the flu/flu vaccine, and are acknowledging this isn't going away. With essentially no cases that makes management pretty easy. They're not easing up on international travel restrictions, which is the primary source for their occasional outbreaks because, again they have essentially NO CASES.

or it might not. You skipped over this part

On the upside, we’ve never experienced a recession that reversed as quickly as this one, which struck suddenly but then bounced back sharply within months. The economy might now recover much faster than it did after past downturns, easing the damage to life expectancy. In addition, the researchers note, “this is the first recession with the Affordable Care Act in place, a critical resource to mitigate the effects of unemployment on citizens’ well-being.”

Wow you finally are admitting that mask don’t work.
              Welcome to team reality.
N-95 you will need to shave daily. Actually some of you hairy mf need to shave twice a day
Then you need to get fitted
Then you need to be trained
Then you need a big $$ bank roll to change them frequently
Then you still will not get the protection you want because the virus is 1/3 the size of the filter material of a n95.
              Good luck with that.

10 million unemployed and December was a bad month for new claims
Yes it will not be Great Depression level stuff.
How long will it take to get back to record low unemployment?
SD is actually better then pre pandemic but most states will not fare so well
CT never recovered from the 2008 recession.
How long till CT gets to 2008 levels?
                2025? 2030? Never?
My guess is 5 years to get back to pre pandemic level unemployment

Today we're at 1.2M vaccine doses/day. Biden's promise is to bring that down to 1M/day for the next 95 days.

California and NY now planning on re-opening again. Funny how that works. Has nothing to do with Biden and Harris though.

Harris was on the phone ripping Newsom a second butt hole. Which by the way, he probably welcomes as it will allow him to receive from multiple partners at the same time.

Stuttering joe just said his covid relief package could take a few weeks now. He is finally recognizing that he cant just sign pieces of paper and wish all his problems away.

What time did he go for his nap today?

(CNN)The new President and first lady settled in at the White House this weekend, and did so with extended Biden family members.

"The residence has life in it again," a White House source told CNN of the energy inside. "It's the honeymoon period where everything feels new."
There were nighttime movie binges in the White House movie theater, complete with snacks from the White House kitchen cooks, many of the Bidens' five older grandchildren piling into the seats to watch, said another source familiar with the activities. The increased activity was met with pandemic precautions, including mask wearing.

I hope they watch weekend at bernie's

Speaking of CNN. They do amazing journalism there. Headline released just today "Biden raises the bar and says US can get to 1.5M doses/day."
