A brief history of US Soccer
About 35-years ago the only soccer played in the US was by entitled white kids who could not compete in the stick and ball sports. Daddy could afford the nice kits and travel so it became the sport of the effete males. Then Title IX happened and all of the sudden American Universities needed sports that balanced with male football teams of 90+. Female Soccer was an economic solution and the era of the soccer parent was born.
The problem with American Soccer is that it was born on the platform of the privileged and has remained a pay-to-play sport. Unfortunately for the , it is an actual sport that requires more than the financial wherewithal to pay dapper trainers with jaunty accents. Like any sport that requires skill, soccer supremacy belongs to those that spend the most time on the ball. As some of my Spanish TS posters like to say, "They have the passion."
So soccer will always belong to those ragtag kids playing barefoot in the streets. They spend all day and well into the night on the ball while your child goes to school, takes their cello lessons and prepares for their FCAT. That is why we will always be a third world soccer power to third world nations.
The World plays soccer to win. We play to get educated.

Aside from being very opinionated and "colorful", the underlying message is spot on.
The difference with England and Belgium ( compared to the U.S.) is that they are soccer playing/loving countries. Always have been. Which was the point of the post you quoted.
You brought up two countries that solidify that post.
If you wanted to argue against it, you could bring up Japan.

USA does not really want to be a soccer power, the bussiness of soccer in this country is second to none. We will never love the sport like many other countries.....we love the money more.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostActually the original post said we will always lose to third world countries that don't have money. England, France and Belgium are hardly 3rd world countries. not sure how you can spin that differently, but fire away.
But I don't think the quote was to be taken so literally that we will "always lose to third world countries..."
We have beaten soccer powers that are not third world countries and we have lost to countries that are not soccer powers but are soccer-loving nations. We are not......yet. You can't deny that.
A friendly win against Germany and Holland are undoubtedly great. But a loss to Jamaica in a major tournament is exponentially bad. 1 step forward, 2 steps back sort of thing.
Losing to Ghana, Jamaica, Mexico (although Mexico is a good team with a good soccer culture), in major tournaments is what needs to be analyzed.
The soccer culture here in the States does not match that of any of the countries mentioned. Look at how many top players from "3rd-world" countries play in top leagues.
Players from Ghana, Nigeria, Brasil, Colombia, Ivory Coast.......etc.
How many from the U.S.? Its not even close. But its getting better.
Only Clint Dempsey has had success and being from a 3rd world country.......Texas! :)

high school soccer sucks. Our team had two mercy-rule-by-halftime wins this week, 11-0 and 13-0. Not much fun for the other teams I bet, getting your arse kicked on a regular basis.
