    New Classification Proposal

Just wanted to get some thoughts from everyone on the proposal an AD & FHSAA rep has made regarding how classification is done.

The new proposal would count 6-8 graders that are on the same campus w/ 9-12 graders for classification purposes. Currently only students in grades 9-12 are counted even if 6-8 grades are on the same campus which would make them eligible to play varsity.

Just thought it was interesting that someone was floating this idea.

That would affect our (Orangewood) numbers, but not sure if it would be enough to bump us up to 3A though.

You are talking about changing everything because manybe 1 or 2 kids across state can play at high level?? And even those make very little difference??

there's no fair system - even in larger schools you can pull a varsity squad for a potential of 4000 students - so of 2000 girls - only 12 make a varsity basketball squad. very small percentage when looking at an entire student population. In many of the smaller schools it is not uncommon to have 8th graders playing varisty sports so maybe they should include 8th grade when counting.

These are High School rules and these are not High School kids yet?? Small schools would not be able to field teams at most schools. Ever notice why same schools always in 2A final four?? Because most schools 2A are not very good and lucky to even have team.

Why not cut out all kids not yet in 9th grade?? Would that make everyone happy?? It is such a non factor that I am surprised that someone even spends time worried about this??

This plan is no good considering it is policy in our county not to allow 8th graders to play varsity. You'd be using kids at our middle/high school in the calculation that can't even play.

unless your 8th graders are on your campus, they wouldn't be counted. If they are on your campus, they would be counted regardless of your school policy.

I coached at a private school that had K-12 all on the same campus so this rule would impact us if it is passed (debatable on that). That school is so close to the 2A/3A cutoff that counting the MS kids would push us to 3A. I coached for 5 years and had ONE 8th grader I considered good enough to put on varsity. She just happens to also be int he U15 girls' national pool. Hoever, I have put several 8th graders on JV for a couple of reasons. They get HS level experience and I wanted to field a team for the girls that got cut from varsity. Most of my 8th grade JV girls were club players who could handle it. Any non-club 8th graders played MS.
