I am a HS & Club coach and while I take offense at the blanket accusations that HS coaches have a "God" complex and don't know, don't care, and/or don't do what is in the best interest of their players; I also know that coaches like that are out there. I am currently coaching girls at a small private school and I have to deal w/ club coaches telling them not to play HS ball, club teams going to tournaments in the middle of my HS season, etc. , etc. My focus is on developing people as well as players.

I think too many coaches focus on results of the game rather than results of the nurturing and that is why girls quit and/or get burned out. It is a sad situation but please do not cast a blanket over all male coaches of girls' teams. If there is an issue that the school is choosing to not address, the issue goes far beyond the playing field. If there is an issue (proven issue) that the school is unaware of, someone should make them aware of it and not just vent on a message board.

Maybe you should realize that HS soccer has never gotten any girl into a Division 1 college. So those tournaments that happen to fall during HS season are necessary. My daughter's HS coach knows this and has told her if she does not want to play in HS games the week before (or at least not all three) then he is fine with her sitting them out. He knows that if pressed between the two, she will choose her club team and not play for High School, however it is fun. He helps her to set her priorities, which are ultimately to play Div 1 in college.

Maybe they wanted to concentrate on studies and preparing for college, IB or not. High School soccer is just for fun. Sometimes kids decide to bypass the High School thing if they are not having fun anymore. No big deal. Are the girls playing in college? Sometimes they don't want to risk getting hurt playing high school. It's been said many times, you don't play high school to get recruited for college. You play to have some fun. If the fun is gone, there's not much other reason to play.

For every bad situation, like what has been described here, there are a lot more good situations. My daughter was on championship teams in both club and HS. She continued to play in college. If you ask her what was most satisfying -- club or HS -- she will tell you HS.

Few HS teams make the championships, so I think if you polled most girls, they would state the opposite, many more memories from their club teams.

A couple of seniors bench players not very interested in work hard to get the start position and with lack of attitude or not enough to go to the coach and express themselves and clean up the dirty laundry if they had any, instead they come here and BS talk against their friends{?} and team mates, but the most important in this, it is the ego,it is to high, and bad friendship. the team is united and the bad apple is gone.

a lot of accusations being tossed around...what did St. Pete coach do that was so bad? Tough to analyze a situation when you dont know the details. Each instance is different. I do know St. Pete and Seminole have been quite successful recently.

I am glad I am not the only one who noticed that statement. You sound like the typical high school coach. Who cares about high school season, the elite soccer players only play high school for fun. It is not serious, it is time to spend with their friends and represent their school Nothing more. If it comes to a high school game versus a showcase, it will be the showcase everytime.

First off, the HS season is MY season. Does a club coach have a "God" complex if he refers to the club season as HIS season or the club team as HIS team.

I don't have an issue w/ club players missing HS games for showcase tournaments. My club players do it all the time. I DO have a problem with a club coach telling his players that they should skip the HS season or treat it as unimportant. What message does that send to the HS players that don't play on the high quality club teams going to these showcases? For those players, the HS is important and does mean alot. For them, they might be able to get into a small college based on HS play. Not everyone is talented enough to play D1 soccer or elite club ball. Not everyone can afford it either. Many players have the talent to get into smaller schools and get a good education. As a HS coach, it is my responsibility to help them do so. We are here for all of our players, not just the D1 prospects.

If HS soccer is so low class, unimportant and low level, why don't all club coaches just advise their "elite" players that they are not allowed to play. Their risk of injury is lowered and they may not get as burned out. They can socialize w/ their friends off the field if they want to. Personally, if I had an "elite" player that wanted to play "part - time" on my HS team, I would tell them to just stick w/ their club team.

this is a coach that keeps a girl at captain this year who:

1. Didn't come to any conditioning practices because she had "better things to do"

2. Is rude and insulting to other players on and off the field (mostly on). Yelling at them to do better while she repeatedly gives the ball away.

3. Plays lazy, doesn't try hard at practice and barely tries any harder in the games.

Captains are supposed to be someone the other players look up to and are a good role model for the rest of the team. The worst part is he constantly lectures about, team this and team that and you have to be dedicated to the team and this girl barely shows up. He can repeat his rules until he's blue in the face but how are the girls expected to care and follow them if he doesn't follow them himself?

I am a HS AND Club Coach. Most scholarships are received as a result of club tournamnets etc BUT there are some players doscivered or recurited at HS games as well. It has happened to 2 of my club players. They did receive some interest from schools as a result of club but ultimately it was thier exposure at HS that got them a D1 scholarship in Florida. No names or school mentioned but it does happen.

Say whatever you want, he's a friggin' boy scout compared to JC at RSL! I'd rather put up with a little favoritism as opposed to having a drunk for a coach.
