    Pompano 3, Santa Fe 0

Pompano decisively beat Santa Fe today 3-0 in the Bobcat invitational Gold Division Final. Santa Fe came out strong and was awarded a penalty kick only three minutes into the game. Joey O'Brien, who has never missed a penalty shot for Santa Fe before, missed badly about 5-10 yards to the right.
Although Santa Fe controlled the ball more in the first half, and out-shot Pompano 5-4, Pompano went into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

Pompano shut down the Raiders in the second half, as Santa Fe only managed one shot on goal.

The Raiders received three yellows in the game.

The loss puts Santa Fe at 11-3-0 on the season.

Inability to control one's mind is a sign of weakness, or over-identification with the mind. In order to be successful in sports, one must blend talent with hard work and a winning psychology. Losing one's equanimity on the battlefield can only lead to bad results. I hope the Raiders learn something from this debacle; a game in which they played well at times but also a game where some players gave up trying.

The fate of a couple of players are now up in the air after losing their poise during this game. When players lose focus of the bigger picture, they lose sight of their goals and become prone to do stupid things.

If the Santa Fe Raiders want to go far this year, they will have to re-group and recommit themselves. To have a desire to do something is okay, but commitment is a whole other ball of wax. Commitment means taking practices seriously, getting proper rest before games, and keeping one's mouth shut during games. Complaining is for losers and those who are dominated by fear. Winners find a way to make good things happen and they blame no one but themselves when they fall short.

If the Raiders take advantage of this wake up call to recommit themselves to the team, then they have the talent to do great things. Otherwise, for the rest of their lives, they'll lament about their wasted season.

Work hard, stay poised and focus on the goal. Believe in yourself or no one will believe in you. Believe in yourself and put fear into the hearts of your opponents.

Because of a scheduling conflict, the game today (January 8, 2008) at P.K. Yonge has been cancelled. P.K. Yonge's coach and athletic director scheduled conflicting games for today's date. The other game they scheduled, besides us, is district foe Newberry. P.K. Yonge's coach was willing to re-schedule but we have 5 games before districts; so our schedule is full.

Sadly, Mathura Rico has been suspended from the team for the rest of the year due to disciplinary problems. He is a great competitor who will be missed. At the same time, his mistakes left the team with no choice other than to dismiss him. Joey O'Brien's fate with the team will be learned today.

In other news, the game at home vs. Eastside on January 16th, has been chosen by the seniors as Senior Night. Last year Eastside held Senior Night when Santa Fe went to play them at Citizens Field. Santa Fe hopes to upset them again like last year.

This is a great story. However, you take this stuff far too seriously guy. You are equating the soccer pitch with a battlefield? Obviously, you have never served in the military. A field where a game is played is nothing like a battlefield. You need to google "Kellen Winslow Soldier" and maybe you will learn something about drawing parallels between sports (a game) and war (life and death).

The dictionary defines battlefield as "the field or ground where a battle is fought." One of the definitions of the word battle is "a fight , or contest, as between two persons or teams." It therefore appears that I have used "battlefield" in an acceptable context.

In my post, battlefield is used as a metaphor, not an equation. While there are differences, there are similarities as well. To say the soccer pitch is nothing like a battlefield is erroneous. Nothing means "in no way whatsoever." Obviously, it is not life and death. Sports is a trivial contest in many ways. I do not see it as a serious thing, although I think those involved should take it seriously. Of course, war is a serious matter, but it is sometimes fought for trivial reasons.

No, I have never served in the military. I consider that a good thing when I take into account how much politics and foreign policy are controlled by greedy business interests. It's especially deplorable when unworthy wars are fought at the expense of human lives, who often are fooled into thinking they are fighting for democracy and freedom. At least the "battlefield" of sports is a purer contest.

Joey is unfortunately also no longer with the team. I do not want to get into the details without Joey's or Mathura's permission. It is not anything really bad; it is related to losing their cool one too many times while on the soccer field. The team will miss them. Hopefully, Santa Fe can regroup and focus on peaking for districts and beyond.

I know both of these guys and they are definetely two of your best players. it seems like they were dismissed from the team too easily. I don't know the circumstance but losing your cool on the field seems to be something that warrants a suspension of some sort but not a complete withdraw from the team. You might disagree with me, gargs, but this will make your team severely weaker and far too much of the play will be based around two players now.

Indeed, they were two of our best players. I'm happy I was not in the position to make the decisions that were made. I have not stated whether I support the decisions or not. It is too controversial for me to take sides. As I am close to the activities of the team I cannot purely report on all of its trials and tribulations without getting caught in the middle or becoming someone's enemy. Let's just say that it is a difficult situation for all and an added challenge to a team that already had its share of challenges.

I disagree with the assumption (if anyone out there is making it) that there are now only two good players left on the team. I think every team has it's top two players. Chemistry is an important issue here. Without a doubt, Santa Fe certainly has become thinner now and afflicted with less depth. Joey is a good finisher and Mathura can give anyone hell who has to be marked by him. Still, senior Josh DeGrove, who was a reserve for much of the year, has been able to score 6 goals in limited duty. Thakura has scored 8 goals and added 8 assists, while Quentin Polly had recorded 5 goals and 7 assists. These three guys are still there along with Shyam and Syami. Coach Miller will have to find a way to shore the defense up as well.

Ultimately, talent and chemistry are both important. There is no argument here that Santa Fe has less talent now with the dismissals of Mathura and Joey. Time will tell if team chemistry improves or diminishes with the new lineup. If it improves, then the team still has enough talent to win districts and make a run, providing they peak at the right time and hit on all cylinders. On the other hand, if the team is not focused, then the loss of these two players could turn out to be a crushing blow.

In the end, it is what it is. I am an optimistic person by nature. I believe that great things can be accomplished by anyone or any team that puts their minds and efforts into it. I believe Santa Fe can do it, but it is ultimately up to them and a little bit of fate as well.

Your point that far too much of the play will be based around two players may turn out to be true. Hopefully, those players will have enough faith in the others around them, and those around them will step up and produce. Time will tell. The saga continues.

No, obviously I'm not. I did checked out the website, though. I find that stuff interesting, if it appears to have some legitimacy. I am certainly not one to blindly follow society's mainstream.

I'm not sure if Riley Martin is serious about what he says he believes, or if that website is some kind of Howard Stern-like spoof. Please enlighten me.

You ask if I'm Riley Martin: I don't know where you're coming from on that one. Are you just joking? Are you making fun of me, by saying I'm weird? Perhaps, you are really into the flying saucer stuff? Again, I am ignorant. Please enlighten me.

Santa Fe 7, Fort White 0

Santa Fe cruised to a 7-0 victory tonight in a game that both Syami Erving and Shyam Allard played less than a half each. Syami Erving recorded three assists in the second half in about a 20 minute span, while Shyam Allard had back to back steals and goals within a one minute span of the first half.

Thakura Borrero added a goal and an assist. The other three goals were scored by John Anderson, Austin Bishop and Dakota Quinn.
