So, for all the kids that chose a school for soccer rather than the right reasons, they should be able to make it right with the 2nd go around.
What sort of penalties were applied before this change occurred?

Players had to sit out a year when they transferred under certain circumstances. They just changed that rule, which means there will be more transfers. It also means that coaches will be more inclined to hold money for potential transfers because a proven college player beats an unapproved high school recruit.

Now why do you need to take a legitimate question and turn it into a bitter, cynical response. Sounds like someone didn't quite reach their own dreams.

Calling it a penalty isn't really the right term but a restriction. You could transfer but had to wait to play. That makes some hesitate to transfer because there's ramifications to that. Being able to transfer and be immediately able to play is huge. But it is limited to a one time thing. If for some reason you transferred yet again you'd have to sit.

If they have any NT credentials, lots of high profile awards and you don't? Could be an issue
Keep in mind players that are recruited late don’t get money (or as much) because it’s not there. It doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get playing time. Also, there are players that were recruited early with money and don’t pan out once they arrive on campus. This happens way more than you think.

Was the rule about having to sit out a year if transferred changed permanently or was it just for Covid?

“The new rule would allow all athletes to move freely at least once, though it includes some stipulations. Athletes must submit notification of transfer by certain dates to be eligible at their next location. Fall and winter sport athletes would have to notify their schools by May 1, with an exception extending the date to July 1 for a end-of-the-year head coaching change or the non-renewal of scholarships. Spring sport athletes would have until July 1.”

I bet the transfer portal will be busy.

Which means every need, school and program are different. Even if late such as transfer, if the program needs you, they will try to find money even through academic or merit scholarships.

So by May 1st (who go into portal immediately thereafter) are the kids seeking a change, Any adds by mid May and beyond are kids who had money removed or none to give
Portal this year will be full with normal transfers and those that seek 5th yr elsewhere.

It's the right term. Kids got ecrew d and mostly forfeited abyear if eligibility because of poor decisions or unscrupulous coaches. Was a total one-way street and penalty against the players. As that rule is gone and now coaches will have serious skin in the game too for their behavior.

Absolutely it's the right thing to do and limiting it to one is fair to all. It really was hurting top basketball and football prospects who were on the pro track. If you're an aspiring QB who can't get PT for whatever you're probably looking to get out.

If you transferred before the rule change, say 3 months before for example, do you still have to sit out a year or do you also get the benefit of th new rule?
