In the rest of the world, soccer used to be a sport solely for me. Zero investment on the women's side. Until European clubs realized that it could be a great money maker for them and tremendous for club brand building. So, now you have teenage women all over the world but especially Europe engaged in the same academies, under the same training methods and facilities that men have had for decades. The result? The rest of the world has not only caught up, but about to quickly surpass the US in women's soccer. Just like on the men's side... everyone plays for high-school which in most cases is just a fun experience... and the dream is to get a college scholarship, not to be the best you can possibly be and perhaps turn pro.

For decades, with Title 9, the US was the mecca of women's soccer. We produced most of the world's best players. We played the direct, long ball style of play with very athletic players. Our depth allowed us to play at this level. Slowly but surely, the Europeans have joined into the action. Their teams as well as the other best countries are coming to the party with a more mature, possession style game. They don't yet have the depth of the US, but that will come. Both Sweden and Australia flat outplayed us. The latter pulled back in the second half because of our depth. We are being surpassed with teams that are simply better. We can yell at the players to play harder or realize like our men that we have to play a better style of soccer. Many of the current team aren't the players for that.Comment
