    Westside

Looking back over the last couple of years you see the demise of Westside and emergence of UPDX. This was reflected in the state cups across the boards. Wondering if this trend will continue this year. If UPDX comes through big time again I bet they will have a 3-5 year run on talent.

    “Talent”

Great question. Here’s the answer “who cares?”

And that's the problem with UPDX: "Run on talent".

Translation: "It's all about recruiting". Not about making better soccer players. BM seems to want to bring the ECNL travel scam to the boys' side--except the different HS seasons between Oregon and Washington probably means BECNL is not going to happen here. Hence the Elite Academy League, or whatever it is--basically a rehash of NWCL without a ticket to regionals for the winner.

Westside got replaced, as incubator of talent, by Timbers Academy. Perhaps poorly, but it has happened--an MLS academy can provide things that no youth club can, no matter how clever the coaching staff is. Which is how this works throughout Europe; pro teams academies get the best players, the amateur clubs get who is left.

UPDX rise on both the boys and girls side is largely to do with the ECNL travel scam that really has shown to be more of a smoke and mirrors recruitment tool as it doesn’t do a lot for making good players. More and more people are waking up to the sad realities of ECNL for boys and girls. UPDX continues to offer opportunities that actually work for the players and teams they will continue to rise.

You do realize you’re evaluating recreational soccer. Neither of those clubs a true academy that have the proper staff to teach the kids properly. This is what 90% of our soccer in the PDX Metro is considered recreational. This is grassroots soccer. Talent will move in waves to different clubs all the time. Portland Metro in general is a very weak soccer market.

You are evaluating the bottom 15% of the talent in our country

Gentrified Pdx se & ne gave rise to clueless well to do families willing to sign up for the pay to play rec model that is neu & nsc combined or updx for example.

As our urban area continues to grow and the demographics change areas that were once poverty stricken and produced no players, have a throng of customers.

Guess what they now actually have pools of players with disposable cash for the type of recreational soccer offered by the UPDX, ADF and soccer chance oitfots, no questions asked.

Tides change for sure, but sadly no buried treasure of talent has drifted ashore.

Other than 6 figure salaries for dem soccer bums.

            Cause and effect.

              LOL.

BM would sell a kidney for his club to be able to join ECNL.

If nothing else, so talent doesn't leave at U13.

Don't be fooled by these sour grapes.

Nahh, WT has a case full of trophies. Counting the Thorns, added three more.

But the original comment was about UPDX, and its attempts to lure in the sort of crazy rich soccer parents who can be upsold. Trust me, Brandon views "Elite Academy League" as a stepping stone. Were I FC Portland--stuck out in Hillsboro, with the two Beaverton-based ECNL clubs limiting their catchment area (why would anyone east of Highway 217 want to drive all the way out to Hillsboro for training?); UPDX could sell the powers that be on a more central location.

And BM has screwed his old club over once already. Don't think he wouldn't shank 'em again...

UPDX had a few well recruited age groups and mass consolidation of 2 clubs. The club had 20 less teams registered in OYSA than the prior year. Went from multiple fields to one field. From East of Portland to West. They are ALL smoke and mirrors. Yes, they won some this year. They were the fortunate club in the midst of a pandemic.

They can't afford to keep bleeding players, teams, and fields.

Make up your mind already. Is Thorns Academy part of Westside, or is it part of the Portland Thorns, with Westside just taking care of the youth-soccer elements that Peregrine would rather not bother with?

                          While Westside continues a 20 year+ talent run....The longest journey starts with a text to a minor..BM

No idea who BM is but from experience I can say that Westside on the boys side is the worst club in oregon. if your son makes the team which is solely dependent on if he is favored for some reason he will never have to try out again because they don’t care who has talent. Also, never should a team be coached by the same coach two years in a row. They have the same coach for the older boys for several years and sorry to say but he is an awful coach.
