Yes, from a physical/athletic perspective, it's great and I would never discourage it. But, for every minute you are working with your stick is a minute lost working on your footwork. No way around it.
I would never suggest replacing practice time for another sport, but to enhance, I'd encourage it.
if they were missing a great deal then yes thats a problem. The club coach would have an issue with it too.. Also, face it, some practices are pretty lame. Motivated players can do ball work on their own and in less time. Its not a perfect substitute but good. obviously fitness won't be an issue.

All sports (unless you are going Pro) is obviously a waste of time compared to using your time wisely and hitting the books to get into a better college and ultimately a higher paying job.
