There will definitely be more schools going this route as it makes a good deal of sense for smaller D1 schools that just can't compete against the big ones. Many schools, students and alumni are questioning what college is all about. If it's really "about an education" why spend so much on athletics? Already some have been cutting athletic teams altogether but they tend to be the less popular sports like golf or swimming. When you see schools like Stamford and Brown cutting teams you know it's bad

Could be but Hartford has been rumored to do this for years

I always felt this was a D3 school for all sports. No surprise here - US soccer hierarchy is in transition. Less college more pro and semi-pro pathways nationally and internationally.

Here’s the problem. To go D3 you need 2 of 3 things: 1) Great academics. 2) A great campus worth paying for. 3) An endowment that enables you to give tons of need based aid.

UHart has none of the above. The brainiacs that did their study are assuming they’ll be able to bring in the same number of students without scholarships as they did with scholarships. If their enrollment dips a few hundred people, the scholarship savings will be long gone.

This is a really stupid move by really stupid people.

Stupid people? There are people who pay to send their kids to Post.

                      What

What are you talking about? That may be to be a top D3 sports school. Most D3 schools could care less if they win at sports. I don’t think Hartford is going to be losing sleep over wins and losses. Sports has almost no affect on enrollment at d3 schools.

Why would enrollment dip because of d3 sports? You think the teams wont be able to fill roster spots? Just look at soccer. Any clown coaching anywhere could get 35 club players to "sign" and commit to their d3 program. You may not get top players and you may not win but filling roster slots will be easy. Like the rest of the d3 programs they will have 35 kids on their soccer roster paying full tuition. Half of which will never play in games.

Not the poster and I agree spots can always be filled with paying customers. Does the poster really think dropping D1 sports will somehow change the culture of the campus? This isn't like U of GA getting rid of football. It's U Hartford and people aren't picking it for it's "big sports atmosphere." It barely has a sports program and culture at all. Moving to D3 sports won't have any substantive impact except to the bottom line. If enrollment drops it's for other reasons like academics, poor price value, location etc.

Look to see more small D1s make a similar move in the next few years, along with a continued slashing of smaller less popular sports. Soccer for either gender will be fine because it's still quite popular. Title 9 will protect women's sports anyway - but if a school cuts its football team all bets are off. However, boys pursuing crew or golf right now as a possible path to college? They better have a plan B and keep those grades up.
