Where do the college programs rank in MA?

Tufts, Amherst, Williams are among top 10 in the country in D3. In D1, there aren’t any strong programs. BC is strongest, but can’t compete against top D1 programs. Northeastern, BU, Harvard, Umass Lowell, Holy Cross are all weak. They probably are marginally better than those top D3 programs.

They might be true. Still, every time you imply the D1 programs are same or “marginally” better all anyone hears is your kid is D3

I don’t have a kid. I’m a coach. Was simply saying that MA happens to have the country’s top D3 programs and some of the weakest D1 programs. I don’t have any interest in this. Was just giving my opinion.

Men's or women's? Williams isn't top 10 on the Men's side (it's not even top 25). Tufts and Amherst, though, are #1 and #2. Brandeis is decent too.

Lots of changes with college coaches last year. Some have a long history of college coaching success (Harvard new coach) while others have one good season and ride it to a head coaching position. Will be interesting to see how things end up.

This conversation always pivots to the D1 v D3 debate. There really aren't any power D1 programs in MA or much of the NE. Sure BC is in the ACC but doesn't do well. Some other D1s are also pretty lowly either academically, soccer wise or both.
Many soccer families are thrilled to have their kids go to a top D3 school and the region has an abundance of good D3 schools. They would rather that outcome than to brag their kid is @ Iona.

My kids played on club teams with kids that mostly went to D1 programs. The high impact players went to P5 conferences and are playing. Other starters landed at other NE D1's (e.g., Northeastern, Providence, HC, Vermont, etc.) or Ivies and are playing. Other players went to NESCACs and are playing. The kids that ended up in D3 were not necessarily the top players on the club roster, but could certainly hold their own. After a couple of years in school, however, the gap seems to have gotten much greater. This makes sense, due to competition, training, and focus. There's a huge difference between playing against ACC or Big 10 or even Big East and Ivy players -- and playing against Hamilton, Bates and Bowdoin. I would assume that the high impact players at a NESCAC school could have competed at many D1 programs, but players 6-14 and then 14-22 would be a significant drop off.

Santa Clara already had a national championship under its belt. JSmith runs the team like a P5 team and coaches and recruits accordingly.

No league is top to bottom very good including P5.

Here is a decent approximation of good soccer schools.

By "good soccer school" I think most would agree programs that are consistently in the top 50 multiple years running.

Agreed. Good soccer school is not a school that peaks once every 8-10 years to win its conference and make the tournament. Good soccer schools can win consistently and give anyone a competitive game even in their "down years."
