What is the Regional ECNL league?

Bayside now will have teams in the Regional ECNL league. What is this league? Looks like they are placing their weaker players in there.

ECNL clubs have two tiers. ECNL National League and ECNL Regional League. A club's top team is ECNL National and the 2nd/3rd team is ECNL Regional. Non-ECNL clubs that want to break into ECNL and eventually get a National license/team often put teams into ECNL Regional first. If their teams do well there, they are often targeted for a National license in the subsequent years.

My understanding is Stars, Bolts and NEFC all have ECNL for boys, thus their 2nd teams (or Bolts 3rd teams since they have MLS Next) would play in ECNL Regional.

MLS Next is still top dog for boys soccer, but ECNL Regional is likely stronger competition than NPL and significantly stronger than NEP.

Honestly, parents need to worry less about the league their kid plays in and more about the coach and teammates. If the kid has talent, he'll be found, regardless of league. However, a bad coach and selfish/uncommitted/poor teammates can derail a player's development more than any "league".

This is not a regional league, like girls. Bayside is in the Northeast Conference of ECNL and would be considered Bayside's 2nd team, NEFCs second team and Bolt's second team. The league has a much more solid foundation than MLS Next and will likely be around a lot longer than MLS Next.

ECNL Regional for boys is only in Florida, S. Cal and the Carolina's. All the rest is just ECNL.

Does that mean Bayside will field two ECNL boys teams competing against each other? Some kids were allegedly offered the ECNL Regional spots, while others got the straight ECNL offers.

They will have two teams - the top team is the national league and a second team in the regional league. It’s as simple as that. They will not play each other. Basically the replacement for NPL and NEP premiership.

Who will be the Bayside ECNL direct competitors? Which other New England clubs have teams in the ECNL leagues, both the National and the Regional?

Thanks! This is quite a vast swath of land.
Does this mean Bayside ECNL will play regular season matches all the way in Maryland and PA?

There are two subdivisions - N and S.

There were only two subdivisions (North & South) due to the pandemic over the past season. Now that everything is clearing up, or at least looking a lot better, I personally think that the teams in the Northeast conference will return back to one big league, which means regular season games in MD and PA for Bayside National League.

My kid plays ECNL in MA (girls) and regularly traveled to NY and NJ for matches. If the boys side is set up like the girls side, you will play 2 matches on a weekend, against 2 different clubs in the area to maximize your away game travel time. For example, when we travel to Long Island, we play SUSA and East Meadow in the same weekend. The travel is split so half your games are away and half are home.

Add in the showcases and tournaments and it's a ton of travel. We've been to Florida twice now and many of the teams just came back from North Carolina. Again, this is the girls side which has been around much longer than the boys side, but it is set up similarly.
