Why Emma Hayes is worth the wait for the USWNT

Yes, Emma Hayes is the new United States women’s national team head coach. We already reported that.

Yes, Emma Hayes will not fully assume the role until she finishes her time at Chelsea in or around late May.

And yes, Emma Hayes is the right hire for the job despite the uncertainty that lies ahead in the next six months, even if that comes at the sacrifice of the 2024 Olympics.

This hire from new U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker was made with an eye on the 2027 World Cup, which he and everyone else in the federation expects to co-host alongside Mexico. Hayes has been brought on to leverage her astute tactical knowledge and revered people-management skills, as well as her eye for talent development, to dig the U.S. women’s national team out of the rut in which it finds itself. This is about the long game.
