How NJ/NY Gotham got comfortable with ‘organized chaos’

In just a year, NJ/NY Gotham has climbed from dead last in the standings to the club’s first-ever National Women’s Soccer League championship match thanks to “organized chaos.”

This tactic gives central players wide-ranging freedom to roam and disrupt the opposition. Though the end result may look like chaos on the outside, it makes perfect sense to Gotham.

“We have a lot of creativity and talent in midfield, so being able to set those players free to express themselves is very important,” says midfielder McCall Zerboni. “We have organization and we have an ideology on the movements and the fluidity that we want and we’re all covering each other’s backs, but also we’re letting people run away with good moments where they’re connecting and moving the dots for us.”

Ahead of the NWSL final, Gotham players and coaching staff spoke with The Equalizer about the strategy and benefits behind organized chaos and how it’s helped them reach new heights this season.
