England outlasts Nigeria despite losing Lauren James

BRISBANE, Australia – The team that puts out the best performance on the pitch doesn’t always win the game. This was the case at Suncorp Stadium on Monday night following England’s win over Nigeria in penalties.

The Super Falcons outplayed England from the opening whistle but they failed to score a goal.

Then, after 30 minutes of extra time, Nigeria missed their first two penalty kicks. That was all England needed to escape the Round of 16 and move on to the quarterfinals in Sydney next week.

Nigeria had more shot attempts and more shots from the penalty area. They also created more dangerous scoring opportunities than England did, but they lacked that finish in the final third.

“I don’t think we played our best game today,” Lucy Bronze told The Equalizer in the mix zone post-game.
