Jordan Angeli grew up playing in Colorado before forging a professional career. Now, as a broadcaster, she watches Colorado natives like Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson thrive in the National Women’s Soccer League and with the United States women’s national team.
Angeli wears Colorado on her sleeve. Speak with her for only a minute or two, and that is clear. For years, she says, people would ask her: Why isn’t there a professional women’s team in Colorado?
“I would say, ‘I don’t know. It doesn’t make sense that we don’t have one,’” Angeli tells The Equalizer.
Now, she’s part of an effort to answer the question with action. On Tuesday, a group known as “For Denver FC” launched a public campaign aiming to bring a first-division women’s professional soccer team to Denver, Colorado, in the coming years.
Angeli is joined in the initial efforts by Tom Dunmore, a sports executive with extensive experience in starting soccer teams and currently the VP of marketing at Major League Cricket, and Ben Hubbard, the founder and CEO of Denver-based insurance company Parsyl.
Dunmore sent a Twitter direct message to Angeli earlier this year and the three met in Denver to devise a plan. They are joined by yet-unnamed investors with the goal of attracting further investment to secure a team by the end of the year.
