How Kansas City went from last place to NWSL contender

The Kansas City Current looked like a potential playoff contender after some shrewd offseason moves that saw the Current acquiring U.S. women’s national team stalwart Sam Mewis and former National Women’s Soccer League MVP Lynn Williams.

So, it probably shouldn’t be too surprising to see them in a playoff spot in mid-August and unbeaten in their last nine games — that is, without the knowledge that Mewis and Williams wouldn’t play a single game through this point of the regular season.

However, look a deeper and there are signs of how first-year coach Matt Potter has found success at this point in the season. The resurgence of goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, along with a goal-scoring tear from newly acquired striker Cece Kizer, has bolstered Kansas City through this incredible run. Now, as the playoffs loom, so too does a question: Will those goals dry up?
