Absolutely agree. However, and this is a big however, Thorns academy requires these girls to give up a lot. No high school sports. No other sports period. Four practices a week means very little opportunity for any extracurriculars, friends, family time, church activities...all will fall by the wayside. So by virtue of the thorns academy structure, it is designed for serious athletes wanting to play at the next level. I think we can all agree on that. And that serious athlete structure got zero college commits. Which by virtue of how thorns academy defines ITSELF makes them perhaps the biggest failure in Oregon youth sports history.

I do not disagree with you. I think that applies to many club players in the high school age. But if college is not the goal, I'm not sure why you would play Thorns or ECNL for that matter.

Thorns Academy & GDAP are different. Thorns Academy players ran XC & track & play basketball. Not givin up anything yet.

The most important word in your post is "yet." If your player loves XC or track or basketball, she might get to play those this year, but that's the end of the road for her. A lot to sacrifice. Which again means that the girls doing thorns academy should be those who are focused at playing at the next level and beyond. Again, making the fact that they had zero college recruits this year an enormous failure.

It's a great feeling winning games even if against low level teams. Even parents love it. You can't put a price measure on that. College is less important in that perspective. Not a dig on anyone that wants to go that route.

Thorns Academy beat perennial top team Eugene 99s 4-0. Thorns Academy teams are looking up.

Eugene's 99's aren't too worried. They can always call in reinforcements from their 02 team.

2-0. Some good soccer from both teams.

Affinity says 4-0. You might want to get on the horn and fix that, unless maybe you missed a few goals because you were crying over your bad decision to stay with Eugene?

Over 4hrs of driving to train in Portland is too much for most Eugene players. I can't blame them.

If thorns got any girls into college this year they are keeping it close to their vest. There might be a reason to keep it quiet. In the past they got girls into a few community colleges and naia.

Three Eugene girls doing Thorns Academy. One more made it and chose not to join. Obviously the players that did join are more serious and committed players. Eugene parents need to quit hating because their kids don't have a high level of motivation.

Do they drive up 4x/wk for training? That is serious dedication. Good on the ones who are that dedicated but I certainly understand why most don't do it.

Thorns only pretend to train 4 times per week. It's really more like once per week and then a session with the tackling dummies. That's all they need.

Four times per week they drive from Eugene to Portland? That's 16 hours per week in the car.

64 hours per month, in the car. That much sitting cant be healthy.

Over a couple of years that's going to add up to thousands of hours just sitting in the car. Going to miss school events and life events.

That's a mighty sacrifice of their youth. I feel bad for the kids.

Good training for being a truck driver later in life.
