It is incredibly gratifying for the parents to win. Nothing wrong with playing down a little. It's good for morale and parents enjoy it.

      The REAL question...

How did the vaunted 01/02 Thorns team fare against Pac NW this weekend? As is the usual, scores aren't posted. They seemed to have pretty even results against common opponents (puny Eugene and Seattle United), so it might actually have been a challenging game for Thorns. Inquiring minds want to know!

Because in the past enterprising states pulled together all star teams to advance to regionals. That is completely the opposite of the spirit of the championship series. It would ruin the system. Select teams should play against select teams.

As far as state cup do you realize how Timbers Alliance clubs would feel if they tried to put the Timbers or thorns in against the clubs they want to continue to send them players? No way they are that short sighted. It has been discussed and they assured them they would not put Thorns is state cup. Timbers can't by program rule.

The thorns OYSA and FWRL games are just friendlies or scrimmages however you want to look at it.

Agree with you except for last paragraph. TA teams do not see games v thorns academy as friendlies or scrimmages. They see them as humiliating beat downs. But what better way for TA to recruit?

This help explains something quite noticeable over the last few months: Alliance DOCs have never been more critical of the Timbers, at least in Portland.

When we played the thorns our girls didn't take it seriously but the thorns parents acted like they won the lottery every goal. Whatever. Next year they will be "locked away" in the development academy and they can kick and scream all they want and we won't have to hear them.

Thorns is 1 of many reasons "alliance" (not a real thing) DOCs are sick of the Timbers.

In reply to two different threads:

TA team not taking thorns game seriously: Same for us. Our coach told girls just go out and have fun and play hard and don't worry about score. Thorns parents - the biggest collection of arrogant and insufferable tools I have ever seen - erupted with every one of their many goals like little Mia had just won the world cup. The thorns players even looked embarrassed. So glad they will literally be out of our league next year. And I hope they never ever come back.

TA DOC's not liking thorns academy - this is not new news. Academy screwed over Bend mid season last year. I have some connections state wide and I can assure you every DOC is feeling disgust and dismay over the garbage thorns academy has pulled. Ours is telling girls to go the ECNL route if they don't get enough from their TA team. He isn't even making a pretense of supporting thorns academy.

Common thread to both is the many, many bridges being burned by academy players, parents, and administration. Which I guess is no big deal if you are certain you're never going back to your old club, and you don't have any other kids playing with the old clubs.

Whoever said the thorns will be "locked away in the DA next year and we won't have to see or hear them", can we lock the parents in there too?

Thorns will be lucky if they can attract enough rec players to fill 4 teams next year. So far they haven't been able to attract flies to the 2 teams they have.

                              Beaverton cup is embarrassing.

How did someone think this was a good idea?
Brilliant really. Wins are all that's needed. Parents eat that up. Even if it's lower level competition.

Just look at the majority of the clubs that will be in Thorns division next year. A bunch of clubs who've never had teams that would even be competitive in OYSA Div 1. And the clubs that are good (DeAnza, Crossfire) are putting their "B" teams in GDA while they keep their top players in ECNL. GDA will actually be a LOWER level of competition for the Thorns than OYSA is. But that's good because the Thorns won't be anywhere near as good as they are this year (which isn't really all that) when they have to expand to 4 teams.
