Tier 1 (contenders, in no particular order):
OPFC. After a poor fall season, rebounded in winter, taking down Westside, before tripping up against Eugene in the final weekend. A dangerous, well coached team.
Westside. Stumbled a bit out of the gate against OPFC, but took care of business the rest of the way. 3-2 victory over Eugene may well have been the game of the year. (If nothing else, Les Schwab park didn't bother to enforce Covid restrictions, so it was the only game many of us parents got to watch up close and personal).
Eugene. Likes to play longballs, but is VERY good at it, with a lot of skill and speed up front. Defense is a bit of a weakness, but posted a clean sheet against OPFC, so can't complain too much.
UPDX. Did not play spring season, still undefeated.
Tier 1.5: Maybe contenders
Bend. Won Winter league, going undefeated. The problem? They got served up a school of minnows by the scheduler. While you can't blame them for that--you gotta play who is on the schedule--you CAN blame them for only managing a draw against OPFC's B team. It's just one game, and at this level (dealing with kids who have lives, and who get sick or hurt) one league game doesn't mean much, but still... that's a game that a contender should win easily.
Tier 2: Dark horses.
CFC, Navy. Did well in fall, did not play winter.
F-Bombs. Did poorly in fall, but I have to believe they will at least be a quarterfinalist when State Cup rolls around. Otherwise JC will have a lot of unhappy crazy rich parents pounding on his door.
WashT. Undefeated in Fall, three losses in Spring. Opposite trajectory of OPFC. Still, SE is a fine coach, and assuming the Vancouver teams play in State Cup, can't be written off easily.
Salmon Creek. This team should be sponsored by C-TRAN, because they love to park the bus. Excellent goal and back line, so they can be difficult to score on. On the other hand, their offense is frequently offensive. Defend and counter only works if you're dangerous on the counter-attack, which is an issue here. Still, if a match goes to penalties, these guys can be a threat.
Tier Three: Group Stage Fodder.
Cuervos. Didn't play in Winter League. Who knows what team will show up in April.
Woodburn, HSC, OVFA, Rogue Valley, LYS. Some of these could conceivably spring an upset, though all are underdogs against the teams on the list above them.
The various B teams (UPDX, OPFC, Westside). You know a club is really really strong when it's B team is a favorite to advance to the knockout phases. None of these B-sides are that strong, although none of these are likely to be on the receiving end of a seven-goal pounding either.
Tier Four: Missing in action.
LAFC/IFC/Huracon. Is there a boys 05 team from this group, whatever they are currently called? Are they off in OPL-land? I have no idea...

We all know it.
It's only weird if people find out.
If you keep it secret it is ok. Same with glue. I like to eat glue. As long as I keep it a secret, nobody can judge me.

Noticeably absent are the teams from across the river: WaTimbers and FCSC.
Any idea what's going on with those teams? Or, is this simply a matter of the boys also having HS seasons at the same time?
Both clubs are better than some in this tournament and would have provided some decent competition.

Not to mention that FCSC '05 Boys have played their final game. Most of this team is trying out for the WaTimbers. This will give some serious depth to that Timbers team. Their defense is about to get a major upgrade with several defenders, mids, and the top '05 keeper in the area joining their ranks. This will be a formidable team in the BECNL. Surprised it took this long to happen.....
