Any idea why he changed position? Not good enough anymore for winger spot? Or less competition out of state at defender so added chances of being selected for elite teams and/or college? Or simply playing other positions to be more versatile? Are there any pros to switching to defense?

Pure speculation:

1) Speed. JB is skilled but not terribly fast; TA might want wingers with more pace.

2) Some of the youth clubs and coaches out there (and I'm not speaking of anyone in particular here, least of all Westside) have a tendency to put their less-technical players back on D, and/or view defending as mainly a matter of hustle and physical attributes, rather than as an important skill in its own right--causing the Timbers to prefer to move mids and forwards back?

Likely versatilit. As hated as it is, TA is highly developmental and will do what’s best for the individual. It’s what’s best for this particular player’s development and future. It’s about creating a great player(s). Obviously, since he is being recruited at the regional and national level, something is working. Hats off to TA.

"Real Futsal" is the team that contained about 5 05TA players (though quite a few others as well, and one of the 05TA players was Malfoy). Westside beat them 5-3.

"Frankfurt" was mainly composed of 06 TA players, and won the whole thing. The only team to give them any trouble was another 06 team, from ADF.

Its so funny how these parents don't know anything about soccer. Example, If the US national team beats Brasil in an official game, that means that the US national team is better than Brasil. These parents are ether crazy or jealous due to the fact that their kids will never make it to the TA.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh. Recruited??? They threw in 3 token Oregon players, all of which had to come from TA to save face. Don’t think politics were left out of these decisions....

State futsal cup starts this evening

In premier 05 boys are ADF (Finezza), WashT, two Westside squads, and something called "Raintown", which appears to be from Seattle. (Why a Seattle team is participating in an oysa tournament, I don't know).

Who will win? This is the second year that OYSA has offered a futsal tournament, and WT are the defending champs, but this year's field is stronger. This tournament still isn't where it needs to be in terms of attracting top teams, and some age groups are especially weak, but 05 appears to have the better 05 futsal sides.

Except... Where is "Real Futsal"? Too bad they're not coming....

Real Futsal, is a place in Hillsboro which has teams mostly made up from the Hispanic community. They also have some competitive leagues with teams from ADF, Westside, Cuervos, FC Portland, and TA.

UGH, this has become a worthless hypocritical chit show here. This age group has been robbed (as have others actually) of any chance of actually being developed in a cohesive positive environment every club, including TA, is an advisary to everyone else and a common long term goal does not exist for our youth. Instead every club/director/coach/president, etc insists that they have the biggest and best thing since sliced bread and really only wants to collect $ nothing more nothing less. Our children pay the price, TA among others are a complete joke as was shown in Oceanside, not because our market lacks talent, but because our market lacks integrity and accountable direction and most are apathetic to it...,

Thanks for the clarification. I'm sure there's cheating that goes on in youth sports, including Oregon. I have no reason to suspect any of the players discussed here, however, and would object strongly to any such suggestions made against them.



Hard to say these days (for your truly); haven't seen him play much recently. He was one of the top players at Copa 2 years ago, and I thought deserving of the TA spot. Since joining the Timbers he has changed position (from right wing to defense), which is interesting, if nothing else.

At this point, there doesn't appear to be any clear-cut standout in the local 2005 class. A year or two ago, TM was often identified as the Best 05 Player, but his development appears to have stalled, and he's not among the three who were selected. Early bloomers that don't grow tall are a longstanding problem in scouting and developing players at this age, which is why it's a crapshoot. Possible that this class will produce nobody of note. Or that some late bloomer somewhere, flying under the radar, will burst past the ceiling of the annointed players. Or that one of the annointed players will re-assert themselves post-puberty.

While the funnel is narrowing, it's too early for it to be closed.
