Not the OP, but I am curious about this. Is this really a thing? People are showing up at TA practices? To what end? Is it true that kids left, and so maybe they are trying to get on with the team? SMH....

Acquiring Status? If that is what you crave then there is the problem. You should be seeking growth and development in your child at this age. And FYI YOU ONLY ACHIEVE STATUS if what you are a part of is desirable and TA is not desirable, especially for the 05 age group.....

Okay, I will take a crack at this...lot's of great kids and I know I am leaving deserving kids off. This is subjective.

5-2-1-2 Formation:

Keeper: FC Keeper. Great kid, great player.
3 CB's: 1)Eastside's Best player defender GR.
2)Xfire Defender, big, athletic, fast NW
3)WT 2006. Surprisingly scrappy/physical
2 WB's: #31 Washington. Tireless worker, High IQ
Xfire initials LF tenacious, but inconsistent
2 holding mids:
TE from FC. Hate all you want, gets results
#30 BSC Field general with skills.
Attack: #14 Wash as good as advertised. Great kid.
Forwards#20 Fast, High IQ, skills
Xfire initials AB. Fast, Relentless, High IQ, skills

Where are you from to be using phrases like inconsistent, field general, and high IQ? You would have to be at all games every week to be able to use those acurately as a way to qualify and describe these kids. Please let us know where you child plays or who you coach for....I would guess you are a certain strikers dad based on the extra praise heaped upon him (comparatively) and the ability to describe the other xfire players. Do we have a xfire mutiny???

Hardly! But we all think it’s cute some of you keep calling the coaches trying to get invited to, and showing up at our practices 😂

I don't think the people shredding TA are the same people who are coming to practices. Just saying. There is a varying degree on here.

Lots of parents here care about status. And whether or not informed soccer parents think that TA's 05 team is better than the "little DA" teams, "my special snowflake plays for the Timbers" looks better on the bumper sticker than "my special snowflake plays for FC Portland".

That said--as a non-TA parent, I'd like to ask the TA parents how the TA experience differs from the club scene. Not the games--I know TA plays in a stronger league. Not the subsidy--I know that TA players have most expenses paid, and club play costs families several thousands per year, depending on travel schedule.

Instead, I will ask about the training.

At pretty much all the clubs, you have club coaches, some of them good, some of them not so good. They train at various pitches and parks in the nice part of the year, in futsal gyms. Generally, this is fairly low-tech and simple (which isn't to say it's not effective). In DA you have A license holders, or coaches working on their A license. But even at the biggest clubs, it's nothing fancy.

What are TA practices like? More use of technology? Better training equipment? More coaches present, and more attention for players? More ready access to medical staff (trainers and up)? Better access to the non-soccer-specific parts of sports science? Where does it lie on the axis between "typical non-profit youth club" and "how the Timbers' first team is trained"?

So, kids don't just show up. That would be a disaster. There are certain developmental kids who are invited to train. They are training players. They have been identified since day 1.

Basically, yes. That is the reality of it. If you wan't to be optimistic about it (which I am sure they want to be), it's a chance to hear another voice. Learn from other coaches and train with talented kids. It is an opportunity to work into the TA system if that is what you ultimately desire.

Before you flip your lid, I am just pointing it out from another point of view. You don't need to go all ballistic about how horrible the coaches are, how bad the kids are, how corrupt the system is. Just playing devils advocate here. Try to see it from all sides.
