Alternative is some materiality threshold - anything close is always onside.
Really no easy fix.

Being an official at any level in any sport is a thankless endevour, but having incompetent individuals at premier level games is obsurd. They move too fast and the kids are now old and physical enough that two more sets of eyes need to be on them. most of the dirty play and officiating issues being discussed would be stopped or severely reduced if this were the case
One other thought--is the referee coach allowed to advise the ref on the game at all (while the match is in progress), or must referee decisions be made entirely without his input? I suspect the latter--and for ordinary rule enforcement, that's probably the best way to go, but for disciplinary items having the ref coach being able to witness conduct the ref could not see would be an improvement, so the referee can keep his/her eyes where they should be; on the ball.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostOK. This is going to be a true non-bias assessment of the match. I was at the match because my boy had a game immediately following and I was curious to watch these two teams play since we could possibly be playing the winner . There seem to be bad blood between these teams from the get go, very physical play both ways with FC dominating time of possession (which they did for the entire game). #71 was very aggressive and did seem to use his arms and elbows quite a bit to try and get past the defenders . He also seemed to complain about every call that did not go his way . Copa struck first with a goal that appeared to be offsides, but it was not marked and so play on . Later in the first half FC appear to score on a goal but it was not counted ( I have two admit, I did not have the best angle to see whether it crossed the plane or not). Halftime score Copa 1 and FC 0!!!
In the second half a lot more of the same physical play but now a player from Copa and begin to get very chippy with the referee ( this player is #11). I was highly offended by the attitude of this player! On two occasions he was so frustrated with the referee that he used A gesture that is commonly used in Latin America as a F-U or the equivalent of a double middle finger! In Spanish it means "Puta Madre"! I could not believe that I was seeing a kid of his age do this to the referee who by the way obviously did not know what it meant . I hated seeing this sportsmanship from a young boy and it made me question what kind of role models he has in his life to be doing such things like that .
FC finally got a goal off of a corner kick and tied one one before #71 receive his second yellow card in the game was 1-1 FT.
Although a man down FC came out poised in overtime and really put the pressure on Copas defenders. #91 was all over the field causing havoc and #88 was there to clean up and score 2 goals in OT. Westside just seemed too tired to handle the constant pressure . This was a very intense game and I must say the officiating was terrible, but what do you expect with only one referee. It appeared that FC either had more gas in the tank, or possibly Copa let down their guard a little bit thinking that FC might fold having lost their striker and playing a man down for the last 30 minutes .

Could the player referenced here maybe be involved?
Originally posted by Unregistered View PostAll right, the yardwork is done and the better half isn't watching :), so here's the recap. Of sorts.
Bottom line is--Copa didn't get it done, even with a man advantage. One issue that has plagued the team is lack of depth on defense. FC swiped Copa's starting centerback after fall season, so a forward got moved to the back line (and did very well)--but depth was an issue. The players on Copa's back line are all quite good, but it appears that they ran out of gas--especially after chasing around BSC in a late-evening game Saturday. Given that, I can't blame the players on the field at all--especially the kid who got clobbered, who is one of the nicest players on the roster. They gave it all for their team, and do so every game.
