Haven't you been watching the news? They do fundraisers at Hooters (totally true).

      Good question.

MLS clubs must pay for their Academy players training, travel, lodging and per diem. Otherwise they couldn't have a homegrown player from said program.

All non-MLS clubs with Academy boys can charge whatever they want. Most pay full boat at other non-mls clubs.

Girls USDA teams/clubs have demonstrated their parents can afford to pay for travel as the parents are happy to invest in travel with the prize being a scholarship. See ECNL top teams moving over and have paid for years without any complaints.

USDA doesn't need to pay for girls to play in a DA. Parents will happily pay and the USWNT is doing fine without the players that can't afford it. This isn't the case on the boy's side.

Why would they pay for boys but not girls?

Hooters? I have watched the news about the Boy Scouts scandals and the only people I would be more surprised to find at a Hooters, would be Catholic priests.

Your brain must be the size of your little Trump hands. There's no money in girls or women's soccer. The only boys in the DA that aren't paying are the ones that play at an academy that is aligned with an MLS franchise. There are academies that aren't aligned with an MLS franchise and those kids are paying.

So I assume that if the thorns develop an elite player they have no rights to that player then? No rights to compensation?

Correct. No homegrown rules in NWSL. The league is barely surviving using talent developed by ECNL clubs. They can't afford to develop their own.

Honestly, they need to do a better job paying their reserves (many of whom are unpaid). It is a league issue no Thorns issue.

Business: Make it free to get rid of the competition and then raise the price after all competition has been eliminated. It's called an investment.

If they had to pay the players the league wouldn't exist. The only way it survives is that US Soccer pays for the stars.

Great question. Seems like something that the Oregonian columnist would be interested in writing a piece about. In the face of it the feeling is it's very unfair. Both with the same umbrella organization. Both doing the same thing or job. Boys get their costs paid for. Girls pay $10,000 per year.

Keeping cost down. Piling into the General Lee and headin' the the Beaverton Cup. Surly they don't have to pay for that.

You're actually on to something with that statement.
However the Timbers are a greedy organization and are not going to pay for any of the $15,000 in travel costs.
But if they did.... They would actually recruit the best players and then could start being an upper-level team and then start drawing new talent because that's where the best players know to go.
As it currently stands, Thorns Academy has no chance to be more than a marketing gimmick.
