It's only the Aug-Dec kids' parents who are complaining. Particularly the fall born kids on A teams. Those players will no longer be the oldest on their team and may no longer be starters or no longer even make the A team. They are begging all the younger birth year players on their team to give up their new advantage and play up with them so that they don't have to move on and likely not keep their individual ranking and cushy spot. The really good fall born players who will end up still being an impact player even on their birth year team will also benefit from the change. A much higher percentage of players are positively effected by this change and fewer of them will quit the sport than before when they were the disadvantaged ones. And there are several fall born kids on each team so they will still be together - no one is an island in this situation. All players & teams across the country are in the same boat. It may be choppy for a bit for a few but it will all even out in the end.
The kids will all be fine with a 5 month shift in age groups. Harder on the parents.
That said, the change is stupid, unnecessary & is causing a big mess right now. Wish it wasn't happening but since it is, can't wait till it's done & we can get on with soccer.

I don't like the change but there is definitely a lot of good in it for a lot of players - just not the Sept-Dec born players.
Our A teams back up goalie is great but rarely gets to play because the older fall born goalie is even better. Going to birth year, that back up goalie will be the starter and play all game on the birth year team. The fall goalie is very good and will likely do well playing up on birth age too. She and her fellow fall bday players will also help the older team become much better.
Many of the earlier birth year players will now have a chance to make the A team or become a standout star if already on the A team.
The fall birthday kids will get to play on birth year teams and be more challenged by older players, helping them get better and helping them compete better on already birth year elite teams like PDP/ODP, etc.
Younger skilled players born near the beginning of the year who haven't grown as much will now get to be the oldest and get to play vs kids who aren't quite as much bigger/faster.
While it definitely has some negatives for the fall bday players, this birth year change has a lot of positives for a lot of players - even the fall birthday players.

While we may give up an occasion goal because of it... who cares? We've played some teams where their only goals have come from punting the ball up the field to the striker who is waiting. How does that develop anyone but the keeper (for punting) and the striker? I will say it can get frustrating in those tight games when you are on the sidelines and you're thinking... just punt it... lol! But honestly, wouldn't have it any other way at this point. It's so obvious to see the difference in play now between a "work from the back team" and a "punt it up to Joey up top team". I am grateful for our coach in that sense.

It keeps the attackers honest. However, I agree that rolling it out the majority of the time is much, much better for development and to teach the kids possession.

Trust me, as parents it was annoying as all heck when we would be in a tight game and the keepers would not punt -- (because they were told not to)... Especially when some of the other keepers we played against would get the ball and then punt it all the way down to to their striker in front of our net. It was definitely an advantage for them. Our coach didn't / doesn't care about that. He's more interested in developing the players.
