Even small clubs should be ok because they will have the same number of kids & birthdays are spread around. The only problem I can see is if they are so small that they simply don't have teams at some age groups. Perhaps they will let clubs under a certain size have more play ups. Come to think of it, this will mostly effect those few good "rogue" teams that have managed to stay together since early school/rec days and never joined a club so they could be sure to stay together. They will most likely disband and have to join a club. Most clubs will be fine. I feel worst for those tiny teams that have managed to go it alone in the big club pay to play system.

How do you get around this age group?

And yes the play ups, last year when the rumors were flying that it was coming for 2015 tryouts our team had already decided they were staying together and "playing up".
Really? How fair is that? Defeats the whole best practices purpose of this change. My son is a younger (July born) back up goalie on his team. The starting goalie happens to be phenominal. My son would be the starter on the year younger team which he would qualify for with this change. I know he'll want to try out with his new birth age group so he can play & develop more. He loves his friends but this is about soccer. Several other kids on the will do the same. My older daughter's team has players like that too who will be sad to leave their current team but happy for better opportunities for success on the younger birth team.

As long as you have a fairly equal number of players from each calendar year currently, there won't be a problem. But if you happen to have an '01-02 team with lots of 02s, and also an 02-03 team with lots of 02s, you may have an overabundance of players for 2002, while having a shortfall for 2001 and 2003. This alone could drive some movement of players between clubs to fill in these gaps, if they really exist. Again, the more players a club has in each age group today, the less likely there is to be a huge skew in the ages but for smaller clubs...

If its not a big deal, why is the poster so up in arms about a 6 month shift.

The big deal seems to be the shakeup of teams that will happen. Might be good for some and bad for others. It won't make one iota of difference overall so basically half of the kids will "lose" in some way.

Negative thinking. Be thankful they have their health and can still play soccer, this age stuff is so silly to get your panties in a bunch over. Who cares if it changes, the kids will still be playing soccer. How do you define they are losing in some way?

Agree. This will tear apart teams and make the college recruitment process that much more muddled. Girls play soccer for college and now teams will be split 60/40 with at least two different graduation years. I maybe understand doing it on the boys side for professional reasons but this only effects less than 30 national team level girls at each grade level so why screw with the other 99% of girls?

I'm surprised more folks aren't talking about this on TS. Unless they grandfather in existing teams (which doesn't seem to be the case), every team is soon to be split almost in two. Folks argue ad naseum about how competitive Surf Cup 2nd division is but don't care about this huge change coming fall of 2016?

You can keep existing teams together but you'll have players on your team playing against kids as much as 19 months older. Might not be ideal. In the end, each club will decide how they want to handle the transition.

Exactly, so most current teams will be majorly torn apart (in order to stay competitive) unless existing teams are grandfathered in and they start the birth year change with Ulittles or like u13 & below so the high school aged teams aren't torn asunder Surprised more folks aren't concerned.

The change will be for all age groups and all at the same time - at next year's tryouts. For teams that have had little roster change over the years it will be significant. For clubs/teams that are constantly gaining new players and/or use an academy/pool system it won't be much of a problem

It will be a significant freak out at our club for sure. Probably why we haven't heard one peep about it from the club. I bet they keep tryouts the same so everyone thinks they're not changing and then just post the new teams by birth year! Then they all turn their cell phones off & put emails on out of office auto reply.

The argument about graduation year is a wash. Most teams are already split by graduation year about 40/60 or 30/70. College coaches have managed just fine.

I am not arguing validity of any arguments for or against. Plainly stating most people at my club are going to freak out, including board members with kids who will be negatively influenced. Guarantee you they will fight hard to allow play ups & just keep teams the same.

What about Board members with kids with Jan-March birthdays? Will they freak out too?

For every parent that is freaked out there is one who is ecstatic. It's a wash and clubs will move forward with it.
