I agree with everything except is you are saying that a parent should get a red card. I don't think a parent should ever get one. However that is easy advice I've been very tempted to get in a refs face when he allowed wild play and my kid got injured. I don't mind physical play, but not wild dangerous play.

parents can't get one. if the scenario exists it would then go to the coach of the offending parent.

I watched the head coach for Beaverton Varsity Girls get a red card at the Beaverton JV game yesterday for yelling at the refs. Then he refused to leave the sideline. He even sat on the bench with the jv coach for the rest of the game.

It was the JV2 girls Beaverton vs. Sherwood game. He had no class at all. The problem started with the game only having 1 ref (how is this still happening in hs?). He missed calls on both sides (of course, he's only one guy) but thankfully the game never got out of hand, because of the classy kids on both teams.

Yes, I agree with that, I admit once I yelled at ref once when my daughter was literally getting beat up and knocked down. Finally the coach took her out of game or else I was going on the field myself. (Mother bear to protect cub.) More fault to the other coach and player, but ref should have given card to player before that point.

But this was about off-sides which I often hear parents yelling at refs and getting so angry about. You may not like/agree with call, but need to remain respectful. Let the coach deal with in respectful way. Also, parents yelling about whose ball it is out of bounds - no need to get so angry and turn the ref against you.

High School Refs in general

I have been to several games over the past 2-3 years. To me, it seems almost as the high school refs let the girls get away with a LOT more physical play---harder tackles, more tugging/grabbing and much more aggressive attacks on the ball.
It may be a function that the high school refs just generally are not paid much (lowest common denominator)? I have been to some club matches with much better reffing as well as a much higher quality ref too.
I just think you get what you pay for. I know that there are good refs and bad refs, in all high school sports. Some take it very seriously and are very dedicated to their craft and have complete control over the matches. Others, not so much. The last 3-4 games that I have been to over the last 2-3 weeks have had very suspect officiating. The coaches have been on these guys but again, with only 2 refs at some matches (one will cover the middle 2/3's of one side of the field and the other will cover the other 2/3's of the other side)---you get a LOT of missed calls, bad calls, missed off-sides calls and missed balls off the opposing teams out of bounds. It's frustrating, to say the least!

I hate to say you did not watch very close. He did not get a card. I was asked to sit down and keep his opinions to himself. The ref told him that he would call the AD personally if he did not. The coach was quite the rest of the game. Once again there was no red card.

Well I was no more than ten feet away, and the ref looked at the guy and made some hand gesture and threw both hands in the air, it certainly looked like he was being thrown out.

He didn't ask him anything, the ref was pretty pissed off at the JV coach and rightfully so. He made some hand gesture and waived his hands in the air like he was booting him.

At this age the Ref's #1 job it to conduct a game that is SAFE for all players. Too often refs let games get out of hand. You can tell the difference between a good ref and a paycheck casher by how much they talk to the players if the game is physical. A good ref will get on the rough play right off the top giving warnings and not being afraid to hand out Yellow cards. The best ref's will also tell the coach to reel his players in.

Unfortunately the majority of HS age refs do not engage the players or the coaches until things have already gotten out of hand.

In the Beaverton JV2 game the Ref didn't have the guts to tell the coach he leaves the field or the game is over which is the RULE.

It's not the pay it's the number of qualified reef's available for all of the games! Centers get $60+ for Varsity games so there is not excuse for them not to be running with the players!

The problem is that the club pay is so bad that it's hard to attract and retain qualified individuals. If clubs would charge $40 more per player per season and send it to the ORA then they could attract and train more people who would then be available for the HS season.

Maybe he would have had the guts to do that if there had been a second ref. Someone to back him up. It's absolutely ridiculous that teenagers are playing 22 to a field and there is only 1 ref. I blame whoever is setting up and scheduling these games.
