My grandparents bought a house for less than that (the same one my mom grew up in). You are right $8,500 and $10,000 are different. $8,500 IS STILL A LOT TO PAY FOR A PRODUCT WITH UNPROVEN RESULTS (LOCALLY)

First that says they have a large roster and second that tells me the roster spot/player was not perceived as a starter.

Other value question that has yet to be addressed are the limited number of quality games and the volume of players needing the exposure in those limited number of games. If the Thorns really wanted to offer a quality 'alternative' to the ECNL they would have added more showcases so that more players would get exposure. Of course that means more money.

These rankings are a bit ridiculous. I'm not going to name certain teams, but it is laughable that they are up in the top 15. Which tells me that this ranking system should be thrown out the window.
