Great letter and there are a lot of people really don't get it and will continue to be ignorant.

I may not agree with everything written in this letter from the WST DOC, but I applaud him for being so upfront and honest with his club members. I hear parents all the time talk about not knowing how their coaches or DOC thinks about things and here we have one being very transparent with his thoughts.

He gave his club members his point of view and invited questions if they have any. Good on him for stepping up and letting his people know where he stands.

Make your own decisions for your family and your daughter. If ECNL is the right choice for you, go for it. This DOC shared his thoughts and that is just one piece to the puzzle each family will need to address.

If you know Cony then you know that his thoughts were not what was best for your daughter, but what is best for Cony. How does it benefit Cony if some of the female players start leaving the club? Cony has been at WST for how long? How is the girl's side doing?

He is no different from the other DOC's from the area, but keep in mind that these guys are looking out for their best interest and not necessarily your child's best interest. There are only a few soccer jobs that pay decent. These guys will do what they can to protect their jobs.

Of course they are going to protect their brand. Anyone working in any successful business is going to also protect theirs. As if you aren't doing the same for whatever club you are involved with. C'mon man!

The point is, good for him in sharing his opinion and not some politically correct marketing b.s. that we all get too often. I don't agree with everything in that letter, but I respect he was willing to send it to his club members.

There is no way that WST would ever get ECNL. They have the worst girl's program in the area.

Cony thinks it is stupid to pay thousands of dollars per player for ECNL, but he thinks it is a good idea for parents to spend thousands of dollars per player to go to Bolivia with him for soccer training.

WST has plenty of scholarship players per team. Who do you think is paying for these scholarship players. Do you think non scholarship players have a choice on where there fees go??

The US Soccer Academy program would never work at WST. Thanks to Cony there are too many freeloaders. You can subsidize training fees, but not travel.

Do you think Cony had much of a choice on the Timbers Academy? It was going to happen with or without Cony's support.
That's right I forgot all about his Bolivia trips with young kids to the sand dunes of Bolivia. Spending thousands of dollars to play soccer on the beach. But cony says its the best ever!!!
Just ask a former player who now lives in Texas that did nothing for her!!!Tahuichi use to be good not any more cony lives in the 80's

And ask those former players about the whopper jr they ate before practice because they used to be good then they ate one and now they live in north carolina and are no good now. But don't take my word about it all cause they no better.

Whopper Jr is for only before games, not practice. Before practice you only go cheeseburger & fries.

somehow, some way that is someone's fault for not telling me years ago. Somebody must have an agenda.

Totally agree. I think there was likely a thing or two that anyone would disagree with, but I applaud Cony's transparency.

I think it is ridiculous how many parents will come on here and view their DOC as some flawless individual, and any DOC who does something they disagree with is behaving selfishly. Folks wake up. Do you do what you need to to keep your job? If you believe that there is a clear right and wrong in a situation, don't you choose what is right?

So some may disagree with Cony's priorities, but the transparency and candor is great. Compare this to Tom over at THUSC who has just driven that club through another year of ECNL "rumors" and guess what no ECNL...we could all use a little more honesty.

Yet Cony loves to bloviate about how he is about soccer. He is happy to lose his job if it helps soccer yet he undermines advancements if they do not benefit him or WST.

People have bitched about the need to consolidate talent so we can compete outside Oregon for years. On this forum no less. The boys DA program has started this.... for boys. ECNL will do the same for girls..... and we have these selfish DOCs doing everything they can to downplay the benefits of an ECNL program and prop up a fictitious girls academy program that even if it starts up will be an anomaly. Who would they even play? Would it be another RTC waste of money and time?

ECNL will not be for everyone. It will be a great thing for soccer in Oregon. It will start to consolidate girls talent more than it already is. If you hear your DOC talking down ECNL, you should leave your club. They are no good for girls soccer.

I've see. The model that has been drawn up for the girls academy.
It will cost the same as the boys academy which is $500 for the year.
They will play a year up in league and go to 5 different showcases each year.
This is the model in place if they do not get ECNL. I was told that if they get ECNL they will have to raise fees to $2500. This will cover everything.
Unfortunately money runs this world of soccer, whoever has the deepest pockets wins.
I can't see a second club charging $6k per year competing with a $2500 fee

Just because your kid needs it doesn't mean its the best thing since the coming of Christ. You need to really take it down a notch on your crusade to fill your kids carpool because you sound like a bumbling idiot who doesn't know anything past what they've been spoon fed by other idiots.

Can you imagine if people put this much attention to their kids school rather than this. Paying 8k a year to play in a soccer league that the few rediculous crazies are promoting on here. Not saying its bad but it's clearly not good considering the people on here campaigning for it.

Most kids including the carpool dads kid isn't going to get more that. 2-3k a year to play college soccer yet they will spend 40k.

As long as there are better kids making it into college soccer who don't waste time and money on ecnl, the program is debatable and only propped up by the few here. Ecnl may be a popular avenue for above and average players right now but it's not the only option and not the most logical or cheapest. Good luck.

I'd take issue with Cony's comment that the results of the FC academy were disastrous. It didn't work but Cony, Gavin and others were a big part of the problem since they undermined the FC effort. They did it in the same way Cony is doing with his letter by arguing it would be too expensive, etc. Their players were actively discouraged from doing the DA and it kept those teams from being as competitive as they should be which was a big reason FC was dropped. He is right though that Westside could not have competed with the Timbers academy (I don't remember hearing a word about Westside getting an academy spot at the time - did anyone else?) and if FC still had the academy they'd struggle with the Timbers too. Sort of like Crossfire is second to Sounders in Seattle although both those programs appear consistently superior to Timbers in terms of number of players, player success, and success on the field.

It's also why the Timbers should have stayed out of the youth soccer business at the local club level and encouraged players to move to the academy if it's best for them instead of promising parents access and better opportunity through the alliance clubs. That's putting money before player development and opportunity. On the other hand, the Timbers know that any player who is actually good enough to move on to the professional level will be pretty obvious so they will likely find him even if he isn't at an alliance club.
