I wasn't trying to be rude. Someone said something about an ECNL announcement for FC Portland announced on Oregon live so I googled it because I was curious. The results were disturbing.

But Cony said said ECNL was stupid and stuff and all my friends play for the timbers and ecnl is not good and to expensive and stuff. Gee that doesn't seem to be that expensive like all my timber friends said and stuff. Crossfire is just a bunch of liars. Ecnl is expensive my timbers coach said so. It's not even good soccer like with the timbers and stuff.

There won't be that many good players in Portland who will be able to afford the cost of participating in the ECNL program. But there will be enough rich kids, not necessarily the best players, whose parents will be willing to pay for it.

                For the record

For the record it will not matter if your on the best ECNL team when you go to these showcases. So don't get all worked up over one team is better then the other if there is 2 teams announced in Portland. Choose the one that gets your player the most play time. The key is to just get your player out on the field. With that being said, being one of the better players on the worst team will get you tons of looks as your out there showing what you have as a player. They are not recruiting the team they are recruiting players to make their team. There is what 54 ECNL teams at each age that maybe 1300-1400 players in that age class. How many scholarships are given out each year? A lot more than that. Over 95 percent of ECNL players are offered scholarships. As a whole they are the best players out there, not saying all the best but yes as a whole concentrated group they are the best players. The sidelines are littered with scouts at every game of the 15yo, 16yo and a few at 17yo teams. If you go to the ECNL web site you can view the attendance of schools at the San Diego event happening this weekend. They are typically mid day games all close together field wise in the event next to the recruiter tent with all the free food and drinks and covered shelter for the recruiters. The 14yo are usually early first games out of the shoot and 18yo late and last games of evening. The scouts will attend the 15yo and 16yo games and get in as many as they can over the 3 days, they will also hit the 17yo and look at the non committed athletes as the 17yo and 18yo girls are mostly if not all are committed. They typically get in 5-6 games a day. 14yo and 18yo don't really get much attention. It's not uncommon at a 15yo and 16yo match to have 30-40 scouts in attendance. You know this because they all come get the profile sheets on your players from your team manager. Then the college ID camp emails start coming directed by name to your player in the tune of 4-5 a week. The camps at the colleges are really at a low cost like 150-250 for a 3-4 day ID camp at that college. They go as far as to even tell you that they can't have you there for free. This is where you start your DD listing college choices and maybe send her to one or two of the choices. Good luck to all.

There will be more cost than that. That fee does not include national playoffs, national finals or any warm up tourneys like NWCL or ODP Friendship Cup. This will add another 1500-2000 to the total year cost. To be honest the season will cost you $7-8000 for the year. This also does not include any costs if you want to travel with your DD to any out of area events or games. That is one of the hardest parts of the program is not getting to watch your player play like you do now.

Just a really poor taste comment.
There is scholarship opportunity for all players. But that is really bad to say only rich kids will get the opportunity. If your player is good, they (ECNL club) will find a way to get your player on the field.

It's probably just Cony posting on Talking Soccer again.

Maybe you feel in poor taste, but how many parents do you think can really foot a 5-6,000 a year bill for Soccer? Also the new crossfire united number is exciting, but out if Seattle there are a lot richer corporate pockets. If you already depend on the corporate money to hold your costs down, it will be hard to double dip and get scholarship money also. Unfortunately the poster above was not far from the truth.

Most of the very good players are probably from middle class families who can benefit with help from the club.Do you think the club can really afford to dole out that many scholarships? I think not. The reality is only the rich kids can participate and most likely will be funding the very, very few exceptional soccer players.

The club will have to make a choice...use sponsorship dollars to hold down participating cost, like this example with crossfire and Seattle united, or use sponsorship dollars to provide scholarships...there isn't enough money to do both...
