Those who are hoping for ECNL to come to Oregon better hope that if Oregon gets any ECNL invites, it only gets one. If Oregon gets two, they will be cannon fodder for the California and Washington teams in the Northwest Division. There isn't enough talent in Oregon to support two ECNL clubs.

Case in point. Look at the U-15 age group where Onyx is virtually untouchable in Oregon (i.e., most of the talent at U-15 is aggregated to Onyx). Yet Onyx loses to ECNL teams with some regularity. While Onyx would be an average to above average ECNL team, how would it look if Onyx's talent were spread over two ECNL teams?

Interesting point. I would say that onyx would be a good encl team. They are as good as crossfire and that is a good team. Not amazing but good.

Regardless I think you have a point but also take away a third or fourth of those players who cannot or will not pay excess of 7-10k to play club soccer when they know they ll get to where they want without it. Good players are found.

          A Different Take

ECNL >>> top level competition >>> #1 College Recruiting Platform

Sure everyone likes to win but it doesn't matter if you're player is on the best team or not. (other then for bragging rights) You're player is participating in The ECNL >>> She'll play some of the best teams in the country >>> She will be seen by college coaches who are looking for players and have chosen the ECNL as their #1 recruiting platform.

IMHO you're putting way to much emphasis on winning games .... imagine that? College's recruit players not teams.

ODP has lost it's position as a great recruiting venue. Showcase Tournaments are a dime a dozen anymore. ECNL is where the colleges go to find players (general statement - no need to flame) and the player doesn't have to be on the best team to get seen in the ECNL.

It is tough to keep teams and families motivated when they are making that kind of financial and time commitment only to get their butts kicked every weekend.

Agree for the most part. Hey, if you can afford it great!
If you can't I wouldn't sell the car or mortgage the house for ECNL cuz the more "traditional" ways still work for a lot of players.

True. But I'm not convinced that our teams would get their "butts kicked". They may be on the losing end more then not but I think they'd be more competitive then you're giving them credit for.

I'm referring to two teams. One team will do well. The second team would struggle. It happens. ECNL teams around the country are really good. Teams and players must come prepared and ready to play. I don't think Oregon can create two competitive teams in each age group. One for sure. Two is a different story.

I know my daughter would rather play ECNL caliber teams and lose then the alternative fiasco we have now: OPL / OYSA
This sorry excuse for upper level soccer isn't preparing or challenging our daughters for college level play. It's no better then HS soccer except for maybe a game or two.

                      Why care?

If you think ECNL is not worth it and you wouldn't have your daughter participate on an ECNL team (or pay the huge fees), why do you care if others do? It makes no sense. Every parent has to make the decision of what road they want to go down for their child. Both ways can be the right decision. It is not a matter of one being right and one being wrong.

ECNL = outside of Pacific NW

If your dd wants to go to a school outside of the Pacific NW then ECNL is a good way to get exposure. Two other ways are summer college camps and ODP. The fact is that most girls from Oregon and Washington prefer to go to colleges in these two states. We have a lot of great schools with Division I and II women's soccer programs. ECNL = outside of the Pacific NW. Most girls don't want to go there.

                          The big question is $$$$

Crossfire, FC and THUSC will have to cover their costs through player fees. They may come up with a sponsor or two but their's would be a player funded program. Will a Thorn's program require the same? They don't have such a structure for the Timbers DA. The boys pay about $500 max for the year. The agenda for the Thorns as a DA is similar to that of the Timbers. What are they willing to do for homegrown talent and building a stronger women's soccer culture in Oregon? The Thorns are selling a lot of popcorn, jerseys and tickets. There are other ways to justify supporting an ECNL program.

                            The Thorns have zero chance.
