The SoCal teams are way too quick for Oregon teams to "possess" the ball at these younger ages. If you have never seen it, you won't understand how fast they close down space. The adjustment to be able to think the game that much more quickly isn't going to happen over a day or two.

If you think BSC or any other team would have done much better, you are wrong. All of the major clubs from Oregon have sent girls teams to Regionals and very few ever make it out of their group into the knockout stages. It is very difficult to simulate the speed required to hang with teams from California.

Agreed. But isn't that what we should strive for here at younger ages? Quick possession play instead of the kick and chase? Nothing will change until we foster a better game.

All comes down to being comfortable with losing in the early years as the girls learn. Evidently, most parents/coaches in Oregon would rather win early before their DD's drop out of soccer altogether.

Unfortunately I think you are spot on, most parents just don't have the soccer IQs to see beyond the wins and losses.

Struggling/losing then being introspective and deciding on growth is so European.

Kids can play on good teams and win at this age while not losing out on development . Suffering is overrated I think.

I think you'll find that most of the kids that won "champions medals" of some sort at U10/11/12 are no longer playing at U15/16/17.

This doesn't seem true at our area high school aged kids. The best soccer players are mostly the ones who were the best & winning championships at younger ages. I keep hearing 70% of players quit by high school but arent the majority of those the mediocre players?

There is some truth to that. The percentage is higher if you consider rec. kids. What you might be overlooking is the reason for that is they play/practice against better players, day in and day out. So the odds of them being at the 'higher' end of play / moving on is greater. However, I saw a girl from a horrible team (southside) make an ECNL roster. At my dd's age (played at Eastside 00s and they won 3 fall leagues and 4 state championships, less then 1/2 of them will be playing next year. So success early on isn't always an indicator of an individual continuing to play, let alone be successful later.

Interesting. Why are the half quitting? Other interests? Burnt out? Or very good but not the elite they were hoping for so hanging up their cleats? My older dd quit club soccer her sophomore year of high school. Was making State ODP but not Regional. Very solid player but quit to have more time for studies, social life, other things, other sports, etc Too much commitment for her (and money for us!) to be "pretty good". Wonder if other kids make that same choice, especially girls?

I have some experience with this. A lot of girls love soccer and make friendships thorough all the time spent together. A lot of girls stick with soccer long after their love has waned due to the friendships. Eventually the huge time commitment is too much if you don't love the game.

There are a lot of girls that play because mommy or daddy want them to play. That wears off after they get older in the face of the time commitment.

School gets busier. More social activities. All factors.

The last thing is winning/losing. There can only be so many winners. If you aren't winning a lot of games, that will dampen interest.

All I heard last year was how WA Timbers Red was falling apart, and how Thusc and other were far better. I looked at the results at Clash and Wa Timbers red beat Thusc 2-1 twice. So what happened?

WT won and were the better team. Pretty simple really. Both games were well played and fun to watch.

You will not beat FC Portland.

Is FC Portland being relegated to silver level?
