My kid should be forward....

Ahh yes, everyone wants to score the goal and those who do are the "best" players. Priceless indeed... assist what's that?? Which get's us to my real point in what was a team development discussion. I have seen all the top teams play multiple times now over the summer/league. I will let you argue about whether it's a through ball or boot ball! What I have not seen from a single team yet, including our own, is the ability and patience to settle the ball on the offensive end and break down a defense based on small sided passes. I have seen endless through balls to the fast forward, the occasional cross from a forward (only the slower ones who couldn't out run the defense) and of course the drop ball with a big boot over the top (when 1 vs. 3 defenders isn't working).
The teams that learn to settle, hold and move off the ball on the offensive end will be the teams that develop the most. Your star forward will remain relevant only if they have true 1 vs. 1 ball skills and can beat a defender face up AND will give up the ball in support of real teamwork.

Basically agree. My dd's team does very well at this age but play & touches are dominated by a few players. Those players are getting better & better (esp at 1v1 since they mostly take the ball themselves for as long as they can) but the rest of the team isn't developing nearly as much. I can see that they would have to sacrifice some wins in order to involve more of the players, but I think the team would improve on the whole more in the long run. I don't think the team will be as successful in a year or two unless they play more as a team. On the other hand, winning right now does feel great so not sure anything will change until the few stars can't carry the team anymore.

Our team has about 5 stars who are heads above in athleticism, about 7 who are middle of road and 3 who should probably be on B team but the best of what was available to fill positions, the roster for subs, etc. We are a smaller club but I have seen similar other U11 teams. Seems there are big gaps in ability on the same team at the younger ages. As the players age, the weakest tend to get weeded out and many of the average catch up or at least lessen the gap. My older kids team (U14) is much more even but still has a "weakest link".

My DD also plays on a very strong team but, there really is not much rotation. Sometimes the forwards and wings will switch positions and we have one or two girls that play decent in most positions but, when big games being played really not much movement. She seems to have lost confidence since moving to the top team.
I find the post interesting. For most of us who have DD who are not impact players really like some honest opinions on what people are seeing on teams and things you should and should not be worried about if your DD is not the impact player.

My dd is one of the stars and her friend is one of the "bubble players" on a strong team that has been mostly together for several years. The strong players dominate & play most of the game - only subbed out for a little rest or quick instructions and then back in. When it was 8v8, the 5 stars pretty much ignored the 3 lesser players and tried to cover the lesser players areas as well. The same thing is happening this year at U11 but not as successfully due to one more star but 2 more lesser players added to the field. Best case would be if all the girls were closer in abilities but we just don't have the pool of players. Her friend is happy to be on the "A" team but doesn't get near the playing time and rarely touches the ball when she's in. The coach is encouraging more passing but the stars will basically only pass to other stars or keep the ball themselves to increase chances for success - let's face it, they want to win. Now, most of the weaker players just hang back and defer to the better players - especially on defense. We have 4 defenders but the 2 superstars do most of the "work" and the other two are losing confidence & mostly watching. The weak attacking players are simply rarely passed to even when they are in a good position & are also less often in a good position to receive a pass. It's not a great situation for anyone. I almost think the bubble players would be better off playing on the B team and being the stars but the coach won't say that because then even weaker players would have to replace them on the A team. The parents and the players don't seem to want that either because they like the prestige of being on the A team. I don't know what the best solution is. What do folks think?

How does FC Pdx's pool system work? Is that better for development of more of the average players?

On the bubble...
This should be quite simple. At this age confidence is everything and if your player is consistently struggling with confidence, swallow your pride and move them down to "B" team. Without confidence your player will never develop, they will constantly be worried about making mistakes and getting pulled from games or deferring to others. They must be in an environment that supports making mistakes! Just make sure the "B" team plays in an appropriate bracket, I constantly see the big clubs playing their "B" teams in brackets where they can't compete. Must be an ego thing?? The irony here is that the "B" teams generally get stripped of speed and athleticism and then play small club "A" teams that have one or two fast athletic forwards that dominate...

First question is for Westside copa. Were they using guest players all summer? They seemed stronger during the summer with some of their wins, but have a real rocky start to league play.
How did VFC get into the NPL division?
Honestly CFC, EMFC, LOSC all could switch with the bottom 3 in the NPL (Westside copa, VFC and FCSC) and I think it would be about the same.
Yes I still think FCSC is bottom 3. They beat the other two bottom teams, but from what I have seen they literally just play kick ball.
I know its still a long long ways from tryouts, but does anyone want to start any "rumors" on players who may move. I know for a while there was one involving an FC portland player on the move, but it ended up going no where.

Can anyone tell me a little about big clubs programs/team this age group and coaching styles? I have heard that FC Portland is the teams to be on at older ages?
