I Agree! That is way too many! You can't develop kids and see what they can do in a game with that many on the bench! A roster of 14 is perfect, more playing time, no hurt feelings, little rests for all the kids, etc.

Just out of curiosity, do most of the teams sub all the players, or only the mid-fielders/forwards and keep defenders in the entire games? I would think that has to play in to the decision of how big of a roster you need. If you need subs for all your players, then you probably need more, unless you have players that can play forward and defense and sub for each.

Its funny to read all of this! Some of these quotes sound like parents who are actually trying to catch their own dream that never occurred!

For those with older kids and more experience, does this really happen? Why? Is it mainly a size difference thing or what are the reasons you have seen in shifting of player stars?
If your daughter happens to be the "star" player, enjoy it now while you can. I've been there, and things change. A lot can change with girls at this age in the next few years. Body types change and those girls that are small and fast and can use their speed now, will be overtaken by "bigger/stronger" girls here soon. Or, the small fast girl will grow and not be so small and fast anymore. Also girls at this age go through ups and downs as they are developing and getting used to their body changing etc. The important thing at this age is to develop every player because you never know when someone who wasn't even on the radar becomes the "star" in a few years!

This depends on a lot of factors. Just like this whole thread, how many kids are willing to play defense? but more than that it depends on the coaches tactics, if he is constantly having the outside backs attack out of the back then they are using as much energy as a midfielder and probably need just as much subs, but if not then they probably wont need as many. Normally your midfielders need the most just because they are doing the most running.

My DDs team has a couple star players (mine included) who are technically & tactically top players. The are super fast but very small and have small parents so will probably remain small. So far, their speed & skills have kept them as top players but I can see how, down the road, their small size will continue to diminish their edge. I know the day is coming where mine will be solid but no longer one of the superstars. That is life. She loves soccer tho and I hope she continues to love the game as she falls in the pecking order. She really enjoys the team aspect so I think she will. Either way, she's 10 and loving it now so that's what matters. We have friends with older girls and know from their experience not to take it all too seriously. Enjoy and take it for what it is: a beautiful game.

Size is a mixed bag in soccer. You can see, even at the professional level, some of the best players are very small. Messi comes to mind. You do not have to be big to be a good soccer player. Speed, balance, intelligence, and skill can overcome. That said, size can matter, not just at the older ages - all the ages. I have seen smaller kids just not able to get past the physicality of the bigger kids. But if you have a smaller player that also has those other attributes mentioned above, they can become great. The balance thing can be very huge. How many times do you see Messi stay on his feet as he is juking up the middle as players hack at his legs? And smaller players have an advantage on balance.

If you think and believe this then Yes it will diminish their edge. However a small player who believes in themselves, puts in the hard work, gives everything they have on the pitch will remain on top no matter their size.

                  Crystal Dunn 5-1
                  Amy Rodriguez 5-2
                  Rachel Buehler 5-5
                  Kelly O'Hara 5-5
                  Mia Hamm 5-5

And many others who remained on top no matter the size because of something called work ethic. The ones on top had something special inside them, that insane drive to be a winner no matter the cost. They trained harder than anybody else. They trained when nobody was watching. They pushed on no matter how tired they got and never gave up. That is how Champions are made and size does not matter.

The average height for American women is 5-4, so most of those are actually taller than average.

Just be sure your not chasing a dream YOU want for your daughter and teach her how to be humble and not arrogant because it will be easier if things don't pan out! The parents that think the team and winning revolves around their daughter need a reality check.

Average height for the Japanese Women's National team is 5-3, one of the smallest teams in the world. All you need is good attitude, speed, skills, and a decent soccer IQ.

To all the parents of little players let me tell you the grass is not always greener on other side. My daughter is a taller child on her team. For the past 4 years since she started playing soccer she has always ended up in defense. Really hard to break sterotype of big girl belongs at defense during these years.

The average height of a Japanese female is 5'2".

You see plenty of taller girls on offense as well. They are all over the field. You tend to see fewer in midfield.

Parents don't understand that coaches are watching player's mentality on the field. Players generally have an offensive or defensive disposition. They have a defend first or attack first mentality. Most good players are balanced, but they still have a offensive or defensive disposition.

The problem is that parents too often think their kid should be a forward. I'm not saying this is you. Just an observation over the years.

Wow. It's nice to hear that size doesn't matter in soccer.
