    Agree!

And not to mention, coming from Salem, for an 8 am game, the girls had to get up at 5 am or earlier, as they were required to be on the field ready to go at 7 am. It's over an hour drive in. Add that to the already really long strenuous weekend.

Sucks to live in Salem I guess...

On a side note, I was a bit surprised to see a few teams there with 17/18 players on their roster. Its u11, why do they have such huge rosters? Maybe I'm just weird but at younger age groups I always like seeing smaller rosters and more playing time, and then when they are older and more injuries and other things happen have bigger rosters.

Am I making something out of nothing, or do i have a point?

Answer is simple, parents egos. There are those parents who can't stand the fact that their kid is not good enough for the "A" team so complain 24-7 to the coaches. So the coaches roster 18 and put them on the bench so the parents leave them alone and can tell everyone their kid now made the "A" team.

Then the parents decide to complain during and after every game at the tournament because precious "STAR" Susie Q who got put on "A" for that 18 player roster has been riding the pine. So Coach starts Susie Q and gives her more playing time and Parents now think she is a STAR.

The above post about large rosters and being on the "A" team is so true. Too bad it is this way as so many of those "A" team kids at U11/U12 never develop and/or quit. As a coach I always have a chuckle at the parents who would rather watch their kid sit on the bench instead of play. And, save me the "He/She will fight for more playing time" bit. When you have a roster of 17 or 18 the bottom 5 are not going to play much.

I think WT-TS had three players on the bench. That is a roster of 14. Is this their full roster?

At this age, team size is highly dependent on the total number of players who try out for the team. If a club can make say 2 teams of 18 they won't turn anyone away instead of cutting the bottom 6 players and making 2 teams of say 15. More money for the club and very tough to cut 6 sweet 10yr olds and their overbearing parents! Then, especially on the big rostered teams, only the true A player parents want play based on merit cuz thier kids would get to play the majority of the time. The true B player parents almost ALL think their kid is an A player and even the ones who don't all want equal playing time since: "they are only U11", "it"s supposed to be about "development"", and "it's not fair if I pay all this money & my little star sits on the bench", blah blah blah.... What I love is when the B player parents start complaining to the coach and inevitably name the players who should obviously be on the bench instead of Suzie! I feel bad for the coaches who have to deal with all that. Luckily, this trend tends to get better as the players age and many drop out of club soccer.

Hey folks, you won't realize this for a year or two, but 10 yr old soccer doesn't really matter.

It swore it did when my daughter was that age. Honestly. But later I realized I was wrong.

Enjoy your kids. Cultivate deep friendships. Sit with your girl and talk over ice cream.

                    Trust me. Much more important.

From someone who learned the hard way.

At U11/U12 coaches should be subbing. It is a large field and there is no reason a 10year old should play the entire game if they are coached properly. Good coaches develop every player at this age. Most states have smaller teams and smaller fields for U11. We are just behind. At the older ages play does not deteriorate after 30 minutes of a game IF THEY HAVE LEARNED HOW TO PLAY SOCCER . However injuries are far more likely. It is not uncommon to see three players out at a time. Teams that can play an entire bench win more than teams that have to sit 6 players.

I have heard many times that the star players at U11 are rarely the stars at U18. My dds team have been playing together since they were 5. The star players are still the same (the athletic girls) except for some new stars who have joined the team and I just don't see that changing. For those with older kids and more experience, does this really happen? Why? Is it mainly a size difference thing or what are the reasons you have seen in shifting of player stars?

It really does happen. At u11 being athletic makes a huge difference, and some kids are just far more advanced than others. But at some point they stop growing and other kids start to catch up. Right now smaller kids can't kick nearly as far, or certain kids just cant think as fast as the stars. But when they are older they are strong enough where the kick is similar and they have hte experience to play mentally as fast.

As a coach of many youth girls teams, the physical changes that these young ladies go through between 5th and 10th grade are dramatic. Often times, their strength to weight ratio is significantly greater in the younger ages (U11-U13). It is not uncommon for some of these "athletic" players to lose their overall strength and speed advantage simply due to body changes that are out of their control. It is very hard to predict.

Finally, too many young and athletic players on both the boys and girls side rely too heavily on their athleticism without developing the strong fundamental skills necessary to be highly successful when the competition levels out. Think of young male basketball players who are athletically mature and can dunk at the younger ages. If they don't develop the basic dribbling, passing & shooting skills they will often fall back to earth by the time they reach college.

I watched the game against CFC and Westside Timbers as we were playing next and I wasn't impressed with the coaching. That coach doesn't believe in subbing or something! I stood next to a CFC parent and asked what the deal was after the other team had subbed at least 4 times! No wonder most of their better players sat on the bench for the last game, they were probably exhausted from playing the entire game that morning with no breaks! You can't do this at 10 years old.

Its also hard to have any good subbing rotation when you have 7 subs on the bench.
