Good question, but the travel is in no way comparable. When I used to live in NE PDX I still detested the commute to Beaverton/Hills. Traveling east you have a good (consistent) idea how long it will take. Traveling west it could vary by 30-45 min. Especially for a younger player, you want to think about all those times when it will be 7:30 or 8:30 and practice just ended and your kid has school the next day. Do you want an 1+ hour drive home with your 10-12 yr old going to bed as late as 10pm?

If you live out east of 205, the decision becomes easier but it doesn't hurt to have options, as someone already mentioned. You said younger, I assume 10-12 yrs old. At that age, you want to look for a coach that will ensure technical skills (ball handling) with subdued tactical focus, and allow for the game to educate the players. If you contact a few of the clubs and let them know you're thinking about your DD playing there next year, I'm confident they would let her come out for a practice or two to see how they do things. This way you can get a feel for the atmosphere and the general practice location.

Lived on the Eastside for over 25 years. My kids played for west side clubs. In part because of the commute. I'm pretty familiar with how long it takes. They aren't comparable. Going to Barlow or Gresham is more difficult, Happy Valley isn't much better.

Starting this year (2013).. all of Vancouver Timbers Advance Comp Teams will be training at Delta Park on the three new turf fields. Easy drive for everyone. VTimbers are contracted for 8 years to use this facility.

I will believe that when I see (or hear of) it. Weren't they to break ground a long time ago on the turf fields. People have to stop believing what they hear and only what they see.

I heard they are breaking ground first of April....they would have started last October but the typical Liberal minded BS that goes around any sort of Portland development slowed it down. Funny thing is....it is a Portland Parks and Rec facility with the field rights contract to PCU, VTimbers and the Adult Leagues. I think the 8 year contract that VTimbers signed was a bit much.....8 years is a long time but then again, it's 8 years of being smack dab right in the middle of PDX.

I heard we wouldn't be able to use it until October 1st.....but if it were ready before we could rent it out. I did hear that the Clash of the Border Tourney would be held there starting this year

FC are on the decline. Lazy organization with coaches that care more about themselves than the players. In 5 years, these clubs like FC, THUSC and WST will be playing catch up. It's all about the person in charge. These organizations do not have the correct personnel at the helm. Sorry, but I think parents are quickly finding out about how youth soccer should be taught.

Try to hold a coherent thought sometime. It's not "Liberal minded BS" as much as conservative "I don't want competition" that has resulted in a plethora of ridiculous requirements to do anything with land in Portland. Liberals have created the environmental requirements that are sometimes very silly. Conservatives have taken away the ability of city workers to make reasonable judgments about code compliance, now everything has to be signed by a private business engineer in whatever field. I hold conservatives responsible for the difficult BS.

Once people figure out that they are paying somebody to teach they will look for coaches who have a plan and educate for the long term. Too many coaches are valued based on playing experience or games won, when the great coaches are made of many variables - especially character. And while there are many characters, there are only a few with character. Scot is one of them.

Well said. Although I only decide on what coaching license they have...

We have experienced both BSC and FCP and have had positive experiences at both with our children. Scot is definitely a man of integrity and I have a lot of respect for him. In our experience both of these clubs focus on player development.

THUSC boys are certainly on the up!! They are taking over from your FC Portlands and WST o the west side. Both ST and JC both have the integrity to run club soccer and develop.

Uh no way. THUSC boys are about the weakest club around. Just look at Fall standings in every age group. Might honestly be the lowest club in the Portland metro area. Good day.
