Next year is going to be a huge adjustment, 4x4 no goalie.....any ideas on what formations are working at that level?

    Thanks
Actually yes. But unfortunately they won't be taught it.

Yikes! So here's the deal. You don't understand the game at all.

The problem is most think it is and most coaches also think that. The name is stupid, plain and simple. But, someone said it who had an accent (maybe Sunny) and it is now the "right way to play". Seems kind of dumb though when you play in this area for teams that play bootball and play against bootball teams, to not play with depth.
There's nothing wrong with the name. It's widely used worlwide. And depth is important whether it's in the context of bootball or not.

Lay off the guy. He actually is ok w what he is saying. How do YOU define flat back 4 w a sweeper behind. Seems to me this person knows more than you do. It's one thing to be dic* and be right. But when you are a Dic* and don't know ****, then you are a loser.

I've given up completely on the parents on this thread....at least most of them. The girls soccer speaks for itself. No BS remarks will change anything.

It's a sweeper with four defenders in front. That's it. The whole concept of a flat back is that it's not a sweeper set up. That's why the term flat back came about as in nothing sitting behind it ...not "flat". So to define a flat back in front of a sweeper is a complete contradiction. Pretty simple.

There is no reason to call it "flat" unless you they are actually flat, that is the point. Just call it a back 4 and don't link the term "sweeper" to it. I am just trying to dumb it down for folks like you and, quite frankly, I don't give a flying rip if the rest of the world uses it, they also use "football" and "kit" which are only used by those in America who want to impress ill-informed parents. By the way, do you use the word "lift" as well?

Here is the point about bootball. If the defense does play a back four (or back 3) and they are pushed up while their team is in the attacking third and the other team "sends it" (aka bootball), the ball just has to clear one defender and it beats the rest. Then, the big girl up front runs past the defender (not defenders) and toe-punts it in the goal. I have seen it so many times it is incredible and that is the point of my post.

If you want, I can sketch it for you on your etch-a-sketch...

                          Lift? as in Elevator?
                          Pitch? as in field?
                          Westside? as in bootball?

All to cool or "street" for me.

The rest of the world, including the US call it a flat back so sounds like the rest of the world doesn't care what you think. Oh and the place to worry about the long ball is against the top teams in the world because those are the teams that can kill you with a a long ball. To say youth soccer compels playing deep is dumb. Any good flat back can handle long ball just fine. The keep can sweep so the world you live in where a defense gets beat by long ball with a toe poke finish is one of garbage soccer, but you don't recognize it. Take your etch a sketch back to your job.

You have to be kidding me and I am sorry if that toe-poking daughter of yours is the one I am talking about. In case you don't quite understand, tell me the last time a truly top team in the world used the "long ball" (or should I say "stretching the defense"?) to be effective?

The real point that you still can't argue is the following...A player that has been taught to boot the ball can't play possession but a player who can play possession can boot the ball when called upon. I am sorry if this doesn't quite make your little world more understandable, but it's the truth so if your coach is telling your players to not play the ball on the ground or to feet, then he/she is doing you a disservice.

Only on this Oregon board would someone be defending boot ball so passionately. And, by the way, if you are relying on your GK to stop it, well, good luck with that. Laughable...
