In the new rankings, USF rose 10 spots to No. 58 among public universities and jumped 16 spots to No. 124 among all public and private universities for 2019.

Over the past six years, USF has moved up 36 places among public universities and 46 spots among all public and private universities. During that time, only two universities in the U.S., and none in Florida, have improved more than USF.

The UCF campus is 13 miles east of downtown Orlando and adjacent to one of the top research parks in the nation. The university also has UCF Connect locations throughout Central Florida and a fully accredited College of Medicine in the Medical City at Lake Nona.

With more than 68,000 students, UCF is the largest university by enrollment in Florida and one of the largest universities in the nation. It has more than 13,000 employees and an operating budget of $1.7 billion. UCF researchers received $183 million in fiscal year 2018 for funded research.

In Fall 2018, the freshman class had an average SAT combined score of 1328 and 4.12 GPA, the Burnett Honors College enrolled 524 students, and the number of incoming National Merit Scholars ranked UCF among the top 25 colleges and universities. UCF ranks second among Florida’s state universities with 324 National Merit Scholars enrolled. UCF’s six-year graduation rate is 72.6 percent. UCF set records for diversity in Fall 2018: 47.3 percent of students are minorities and 26 percent are Hispanic. UCF ranked #36 nationally for best Undegraduate Teaching.

The university offers 101 bachelor’s, 88 master’s, 29 research doctorates, 3 professional doctorates and 3 specialist degree programs, and it leads all universities in Florida in conferring more than 16,000 degrees a year.

UCF is committed to innovative community partnerships, world-class research with local impact, and the integration of technology and learning. Students completed 18,585 co-op, internship and service-learning experiences annually. UCF awarded 2,338 baccalaureate degrees in STEM fields in 2016–17.
Career Services helped 45,250 students search and compete for jobs in 2017–18.

UCF employs more than 13,000 faculty and staff members. The university impacts more than 112,000 additional jobs and adds $7.73 billion of value to the economy, according to a 2009–10 study by the Florida Board of Governors.

          HIGH-TECH HUB
In 1996, the Florida High Tech Corridor Council was established and formally funded by the Florida State Legislature to promote high-tech employment in partnership with education by attracting, retaining and growing high-tech industry in the service areas of UCF and the University of South Florida. The outcome of this effort has been matching research funds, workforce development, pro-industry legislation and tax incentives.

What does the student want to study? Where do they want to live, work and play when they are in college and after graduation? Dream Big at UCF.

UCF was founded in the 1960's as Florida Technological University. Today, it boasts BIG technology partners like NASA, Harris, Siemens, Lockheed Martin, Duke Energies, Bill Gates Foundation and many other partners where UCF students are interning and getting jobs out of college. Here are just a few partnerships and recent happenings.

The $55 million from NASA over the next five years will allow for unprecedented imaging of the Earth’s upper atmosphere. And the grant distinguishes UCF as the first Florida university to lead a NASA mission.

The UCF Lockheed Martin College Work Experience Program (CWEP) is an ideal opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain real-world work experience relevant to their academic and career goals while maintaining full-time enrollment with the University of Central Florida. The program provides students with a year-round paid opportunity to explore a unique training experience on the cutting edge of technology. Also, Lockheed Martin employs more than 2,200 UCF graduates in Orlando
Nov 2018 Cyber Education to Expand at UCF with $1.5 Million Gift from Lockheed Martin
The gift will be used to create the Lockheed Martin Cyber Innovation Lab, which will help ensure UCF remains on the forefront of educating and empowering the nation’s future cyber experts. The 970-square-foot lab, which will be located in the atrium of UCF’s Engineering I building, will serve as a learning hub, classroom, and the practice center for UCF’s Cyber Defense Club. It is expected to open in early 2019.

Founded in 1982 as a research unit of UCF, the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) continues the partnership forged among UCF, the state of Florida, local industry and Department of Defense. It has achieved international recognition through its work in collaboration with the military simulation and training commands located in the 1,027-acre Central Florida Research Park adjacent to UCF. Today, the institute is at the heart of a $5.0 billion industry.

Today, the UCF College of Medicine anchors a medical city which is projected to create 30,000 jobs and more than $7.6 billion in economic activity by 2017 with business partners including the University of Florida and Nemours Children’s Hospital.

With seven of the top theme parks in the world, a record-setting 66 million visitors in 2015, Orlando, Florida continues to lead the nation as its most visited destination. The partnership between UCF and Harris Rosen, the owner of the largest independently held hotel group in Florida, was a natural fit. Not only did Rosen donate $10 million and 25 acres of land, he also helped shape the program that now enrolls 3,500 students, making it the largest hospitality program in the nation. Situated in the heart of hospitality, Rosen College of Hospitality Management also looks like it belongs in a world-class destination: the 159,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art, Mediterranean resort-style campus is the largest facility ever built for hospitality management education.

TAMPA, Fla. (June 28, 2018) – The University of South Florida can officially stand side by side with the University of Florida and Florida State University as the best universities in the state. The Florida Board of Governors voted unanimously on Thursday to formally designate USF as a “Preeminent State Research University,” recognizing the institution’s high performance and strong trajectory toward national excellence.

Preeminence represents the culmination of USF’s many years of careful strategic planning, focused allocation of resources and determination of thousands of students, faculty and staff. The designation comes with millions of dollars in additional funding, carries prestige that will benefit USF in many key areas, including new student and faculty recruitment, and will enhance the economic development of the Tampa Bay region.

Is UF teaching, developing, meeting more of Florida's elite students at graduation and getting them into Florida's future workforce, or does UF care more about moving up in rankings based on its freshman incoming stats (most who don't actually enroll at UF), about research grant money, not growing in size and serving less Florida's homegrown and grabbing more out-of-state students for their tuition money? UF's graduate programs help it get its national rankings but not every student wants to be a veterinarian or citrus farmer or brain cancer specialist or live in Gainesville for 8 years doing it.

Exerpts from USF Tampa receives coveted ‘Preeminent’ distinction among Florida universities-June 29, 2018
USF touted the designation as a recognition of the school’s “high performance and strong trajectory toward national excellence.”
The Florida Board of Governors voted Thursday to designate the University of South Florida with the highly sought title of “Preeminent State Research University,” but this doesn’t include the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus, yet.

Two other Florida universities, the University of Florida and Florida State University, hold the same distinction. But the title applies only to the Tampa campus until July 2020, when the pending consolidation of USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee will go into effect. Once it takes place, all three campuses will carry the designation.

USF Tampa and other universities in the category will each receive a recurring $6.15 million in funds as a reward to help improve graduation rates, hire more faculty to lower the student to faculty ratio and conduct research in areas such as heart health and medical engineering, USF spokesman Adam Freeman said.

“This validates our efforts over more than a decade to transform USF into a premiere institution of higher education, rivaling peers twice our age,” said USF System President Judy Genshaft in a statement released by the university. “This critical designation will have an exponential impact on our continued efforts to grow our research enterprise, provide the highest-quality education to our students, strengthen our partnerships and help us make an even bigger difference in our community.”

The state established the Florida Preeminence program in 2013 to reward universities based on 12 metrics, including graduation rates, student retention rates, research expenditures and the number of patents awarded. In order to earn Preeminence, a university must meet or exceed at least 11 of the 12 benchmarks, USF noted in the news release.

USF met nine in 2016, and improvements in the graduation and student retention rates pushed the school to the goal.

No they did not. UF finished ahead of UCF, sorry.

They play in a sh1tty conference and lost to the first real competition they had all season...even though it was a bowl game which is much easier to get up to play for and compete in than the weekly grind of a power 5 conference schedule.

When I moved here from the midwest I thought my small hole-in-the-wall hometown had a narrow view of things like this (academic/employment landscape). It baffles me that even in the ol` big city life down here most cant seem to see past the state line.

Look most of the big 4-year universities are really going to be about the same unless you are looking at a top-tier school (no UF Alumni not you... sit down) but even at places like harvard/yale its more the networking than the school. If you go to school with a bunch of smart/rich people and make friends, that comes in handy!

If you are really looking into it for your kid, not just to pump the fist for your alma mater look at these things.

-Major - Some schools have better programs than others in specific fields.
-Your kid - What type of environment will they really fit in with (them... not your perception of them!)
-Money:degree ratio - Talk them out of going 175K in debt for a BA in history.

Most importantly they will get what they put in. Someone who picks up a decent education and network at a C list school will likely do better than someone who picks up a drug habit at top dog.

Also the grade system here is strange. Kids aren't getting in without OVER a 4.0...? I know this is true but this is a false positive here that they have built into the system in FL to try to make the school system (k-12 and universities) look better. Its not like that everywhere else. Why does my son need an average grade of 112%??? Hope he doesn't want to be a math major. I guess what I am saying here is that there are kids in... lets say MA, that have 3.9 or 4.0 that are smarter than the kids in FL with a 4.6.
